My motivation to be a social worker initially came up by my aunt. Since childhood, I realized that my aunt, a Macanese, was a deaf. Even though our conversation depended on a pen and pieces of paper, we had tight relationship because she treated me like her own children. Unfortunately, my aunt split after twenty years of marriage spontaneously due to my uncle’s adultery. After that, aunt loss of interest in everything, even communicated with people. My main duty as a welfare worker is to measure physical health by controlling the blood pressure and blood sugar and mental health by having communication regularly of 100 services users, a three-year EHealth project sponsored by The Hong Kong Jockey Club. Moreover, I am responsible for the operation of Vitality Academy for Life Long Learning, to organize some innovative activities to young old. Through a year, I get more understanding and discovery to this industry and to elderly, even to myself. However, some colleagues are dissatisfied with this because they thought holding a large-scale event is a waste of time, even impairing their professional as social workers. Yet, I would say social worker is diverse, and should have innovative perception on their role. Our Centre would invite celebrities and sponsors to the events for the purpose of demonstrating newly developed projects. It could seize the financial support from sponsor and indirectly benefit to the old. As long as the funding could enhance more services to the aged, it is well worth of doing that. For elderly, due to my job content, I met those who go to centre regularly. In my observation, most of them prefer to stay out because of the unbearable boredom after retirement. I used to think the aged are confined to learn new things by reason of their degenerate physical strength and intelligence. Surprisingly, many of them are willing to receive new information and knowledge like the mobile technology. It definitely breaks the obsolete image of the elderly in my mind. Elderly in their retirement could live every moment to its fullest. For myself, over a year, It is enjoyable to all the challenges I have met in workplace, for instance, dealing with the conflicts between services users dexterously or

    1. As a social worker, I would look at their strength perspective first because I would want my clients to see how they could use their positive qualities to solve other issues going on among them. One example of a strength perspective for these teens is that they are still enrolled in school and are still attending school regularly. Also, how their grades aren’t completely failing grades that they are keeping them in the average percentile. And I would also look at how it hasn’t lead them to do drug or gang activities, which most teens tend to do when they are having behavior programs.…

If service users, carers and social workers work alongside each other instead of against each other they can both give feedback back and forth and work in partnership to form better outcomes for others in similar situations. This will help build up relationships and helps the understanding of both parties. This situation was an impacting one to reflect on as the Congress day was set up to help widen our knowledge and I found it highly beneficial from this specific workshop that 'service users and carers are so diverse and not two are alike.' (Congress day, 2017) This means that a social worker needs to have the skill of adapting to suit the service user and carers needs they are working with.…
