My motivation for choosing nursing as a profession is mainly due to my desire to have a sound career with opportunity for job security and advancement in the future. With our aging population living longer, the prevalence of chronic disease processes and the ever changing delivery of care; nurses will continue to be in high demand. In addition, due to a potential shortage of physicians, I believe there may be an increased need for quality nurses who are compassionate and educationally prepared. My long term goal is to earn my degree as a nurse practitioner which provides more opportunity for growth and career enhancement. First, I am looking for a learning experience that will provide me the tools I need to become a talented and competent nurse. In my research I found that Saint Luke’s College has one of the highest pass rates in the nation for the NCLEX. I feel that this is confirmation that nursing students are well trained and prepared for success in nursing upon successful completion of this program. I understand the learning experience and methods utilized by Saint Luke’s College involve a great variety for all types of learning styles which I believe are important. These reasons combined with the opportunity to work within a great health system like Saint Luke’s Health System through the Clinical Instruction Method give me confidence that I will be in a learning environment to assist me in obtaining my degree and prepare me to be a great nurse. In addition, I know students who have obtained their degrees at Saint Luke’s College, who now have gone on to enjoy successful careers within their chosen fields. On a more personal note, my mother underwent heart surgery by the heart team at Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute. .Finally, it was doctors and nurses from Saint Luke’s Hospital who performed a very rare heart surgery on my mom. Dr. Borkon and his entire team of nurses and doctors performed a bypass of my mom’s celiac artery, which very few doctors have ever done. This was a scary time for our entire …show more content…
I have been involved in the nursing field through volunteering in clinical settings or witnessing firsthand the care of a nurse with family members. I have had the opportunity to earn my certificate as a CNA and use this to volunteer in clinical settings. I have also had the opportunity to volunteer during my certification process at Good Samaritan Society. Following my certification I have been able to volunteer at Lawrence Memorial Hospital and work as a CNA at The Health Care Access Clinic. Both have helped me better understand the environment and the day-to-day activities that are required of a nurse. As I spent time watching great nurses work with my mom during and following her bypass surgery at Saint Luke’s Hospital, I was able to learn by observing and see how both compassion and competence plays such an important role in the care of patients. Even before my mom’s surgery, I had already decided to pursue nursing, but this time, witnessing care first hand for someone I love, helped cement my belief that nursing was the right career choice for me. At this point, my career objectives are to complete my nursing degree and pursue a career in pediatrics or cardiology. To further my education and to enhance my career I expect to pursue a degree as a nurse
