“My Mother 's Smile” has often been criticized as being an odd, senseless, non-realistic film, both by Italian and foreign people who criticize and discuss the many weak points of this film. Personally, I believe this film goes much beyond the dim scenes. It has powerful significance behind it. Personally, I believe this film marked a highlight in Marco Bellocchio 's, producer, career. The film is does not completely glorify or review societal and political views, but rather portray a personal aspect of pressures surrounding one forming a psychological view. This film is far from dull. This film was greatly disapproved by church officials for the method’s used by Bellocchio. He portrayed the complete opposite of what Italian tradition and religion stands for. But did he also show a glimpse of reality behind closed doors? I understand why religious wise this church would be offended, but on a more societal view, I believe this film is an eye opener.
The painted portrait of Italian culture is a close knit family with an unbreakable bond. Family comes before anything. Family signifies affections, which greatly lacked in Ernesto’s family. Ernesto spent years detached from his family. He was completely unaware of the in process canonization of his mother. He had not seen most of his family for years. This is not completely uncommon in today’s culture.
Italians also exemplify a great commitment to religion and beliefs. They are portrayed to believe in purity and as the film discussed, an insurance of a good afterlife. Again, It is unclear whether Ernesto’s family was truly committed to religion. He was not confused about his beliefs and views. He did not hid this from his young son. He often discussed his disbelief with his son. This would also be considered contrary to traditional Italian
