My mother is a career of a disabled man of low socio-economic status and so I have a lot of experience and observations in regards to health and illness of a low socio-economic person living with a chronic disability compared to the heath and illness of a person opposite. Luke is blind 34 year old man and has Bardet- Biedl syndrome (Koenders, 2016). He was told he would not live very long but he has already passed the age and beyond that he was expected to live. Luke is morbidly obese and didn’t understand this until just the last 6 months when he was taken to the doctor. Where the lecture touched on health issues in a broader manner, eModule 5 goes more in depth and focuses on health issues affecting vulnerable groups specifically groups with poverty restrictions, education and health services (eModule 5: Vulnerable People in Marginalised Groups and Health Related Issues, 2016). This resource is very effective in the expansion and in depth reflection of my own reflection of the question. The reading helps me understand what the definitions are for low socio-economic people such as stigma, what it means for a group to be vulnerable and the difference between equity and equality. The reading has helped me gain a better understanding of disability in relation to people who are living in low socio-economic status. Although it is difficult living with a disability it can be made worse by things such as stigma- “a physical or social trait, such as a disability or criminal record that results in negative social reactions such as discrimination and exclusion” (eModule 5: Vulnerable People in Marginalised Groups and Health Related Issues, 2016). Because of this stigma it can be hard for disabled people to relate and interact with the wider community. Relating back to the question- it can be harder to give health advice for a disabled person with low socio-economic status because they do not have the same resources as people with middle or high socio-economic status.
