I’m well aware that my duties as a Social Worker will be to help people in need, address their problems, and enhance my professional expertise. How do I help people create change when they’re struggling and resistant to help? Societal values teach me that you can’t help someone who isn’t willing to help themselves. My personal values tell me that I can love them through it. NASW requires me to plant still seeds of hope by using the strength perspective. It was a difficult lesson for me to learn and apply through life. The reality of life is that we all are so similar yet we live in our world and on our own time. I do believe that delivery of the right message at the appropriately time is truly rooted in compassion.
The most effective ways that I can manage my personal values in a way that still allows me to stay true to them , while allowing my professional values to guide social work practice is to know myself. I will always bring with me in any situation my personal values and beliefs that shaped me throughout my life.
