My Most Descriptive Memories Of My Early Childhood Experiences

I remember my first grade teacher, Mrs. Walker, teaching me to read. I remember that we had the Dick and Jane readers. I was six years old at the time. I also remember that we had phonics workbooks and learned to read using phonics. Furthermore, I remember that Mrs. Walker taught us in small groups at a table. Additionally, we completed projects with our small group reading, such as making peanut butter balls that was featured in one of our stories. The peanut butter ball project is one of the most vivid memories of my early childhood experiences. I even remember that we had small group reading in the morning and we had phonics after snack in the afternoon. Mrs. Walker allowed me to take the reading books home with me. I would then play school with my three-year old sister, Robin. We had a large chalkboard that I used to teach Robin what I had learned in school each day.. I remember asking Mrs. Walker to take home the books so that I could teach my sister to read. It seems that my sister did indeed learn to read from my mimicking of Mrs. Walker’s lessons. My sister learned to …show more content…
Cook was my middle school and high school English language arts teacher. I had her for 8th grade, 10th grade, 11th grade, and 12th grade. I remember reading poetry, Our Town, Of Mice and Men, Macbeth, Driving Miss Daisy, Pygmalion and many others. She taught me about the layers of meanings in stories. She was my inspiration to be high school English language arts teacher. I wanted to teach others to think about what they are reading and discover all of the layers of meaning. Thankfully, I became a teacher at my alma mater and Mrs. Cook was my mentor. After her retirement, I moved into her old classroom. Although I don’t remember all of the teaching strategies that my teachers used to teach me to read, I do know that the positive impact that they had on me influenced my teaching today. I pray that I influence the lives of my students in the same manner that my teachers influenced

Learning to read is a skill many can obtain quickly or not so well. Myself, on the other hand was one of the many children who struggled with not only the thought of reading, but the actual process of reading not only a book, but sentences, word and sounding out words. Struggling through elementary with reading problems and on and off again help made it seem even worse. Going into kindergarten was intimidating, with all the bright colored posters with words even I couldn’t read. Having to be assigned seats next to strangers who soon would become my closest friends.…

To succeed as a teacher, I need each one of my students to succeed. I first started reading and writing in preschool, my teacher was very helpful and did everything she could do to help me achieve goals, and become who I am today. When I was younger I would pretend that I could read and I would read to all of my toys. In preschool, my teacher saw me trying to read so she came over to me and started to help me sound out the words and form the sentences so that I could read. The first book I read was Dr.Seuss’ “Green, Eggs and Ham.”…
