Practices progressed with “attorneys” working on direct and cross examinations of “witnesses”. However, one week before the first competition, an “attorney” abruptly left the team. To fill this void, our coach appointed me the permanent replacement “attorney”. This was incredibly daunting as I had to work from scratch, formulating questions for both direct and cross examinations of prosecution “witnesses” when I had already put all my focus on defense strategy. North Shore Community College celebrated “Law Day” this year by having noted criminal defense attorney J.W. Carney as a guest speaker. He began his speech by addressing how his own Paralegal makes his job easier by keeping him organized, and having him stay on track by telling him what needs to be done. He gave the advice of “follow your dreams” to anyone starting out in the legal profession. Attorney Carney stated the reason he became a lawyer was inspiration from watching the show “The Defenders,” and from movies like, “Gideon’s Trumpet.” In the beginning of his career, he worked for five years at the public defender’s office, five years as a prosecutor and now is in private practice.…

“There I was, getting ready to argue my very first contested case, and it's before the United States Supreme Court. I'll never forget the morning of oral arguments. I got up really early and headed over to put the last touches on my argument. There was a sense of majesty, walking up those stairs, my steps echoing on the marble. I went to the lawyers' lounge — to go over my argument.…

However, it suffers from a handful of blatant and severe shortcomings. DiLorenzo excels in his writing skills. Throughout the entirety of his book, his words held a clear and concise tone with “the flair and passion of a prosecuting attorney” (Gamble 2003). Prior to the mock jury activity in class, I did not know or understand much about the judicial or trial process. In this paper, I will just summarize the trial, my thoughts on the jury process and if I think justice is achieved through these systems. I have been in a court situation before where I have needed to testify, so I understand a bit more about the trial system than someone who hasn’t experienced it. The mock trial was a very engaging and helpful activity where I was able to more fully understand what happens in a trial. I was able to put myself in the juror’s shoes and to feel how tough of a decision it is because someone’s life is in your hands.…

Opening statements are when the prosecution and the defense each outline their case (Lippmann, 2014, p.533). I next witnessed the prosecution present a Case-in-Chief. The Case-in-Chief is where the prosecutor has the burden of proving every element of the crime and in an effort to establish the defendant’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, may present the direct testimony of witnesses and may introduce documents, scientific tests, and tangible evidence (Lippmann, 2014, p.533). At this point the arresting Fresno PD Officer Brian Twedt was called to the stand for questioning. I then witnessed a Cross-Examination which involves asking the witness questions about his or direct examination (Lippmann, 2014, p.533).…

From the presentation of facts, to how the defense attorneys and prosecutors formally conducted themselves, as well as the surroundings of the court were all fascinating and encouraging to me. Although I was upset that the video of the guards beating the inmate were not shown nor discussed, I felt that both representatives did a magnificent job in protecting their clients. Finally, any criminal justice system or process is not easy however, this pretrial made me confirm that although it may be hard along the road, I still strongly have the dream of becoming a public defendant. Being a part of such a system that changes life and society in general, is a life goal that I will see to it that I accomplish.…
