My Mistakes In My Writing Analysis

The amount of mistakes a human can make is innumerable and I am no exception. Never have I had a perfect paper; they’ve always had issues with the type of language, the portrayal, the grammar/mechanics of the writing, and the overall elaboration of the sentences. These aren’t difficult problems to fix, just careless mistakes. Most of these problems can be fixed with more editing, which comes to the most common mistake of my writing, revising. Although I do revise, I always miss small details that my instructor is sure to unearth. But, there are so many resources available that can easily help with these, for example: The St. Martin’s Handbook and The Composition of Everyday Life. Both resources were very valuable to my education this semester in College Writing One. The portrayal of ideas in a passage, a mystery to me. How do authors like J.K Rowling or F. Scott Fitzgerald illustrate such fantastic images in the minds of their readers? At times where I felt that I was using “big girl” words, I felt so proud, like I was actually at the college level. But unfortunately, I was often using them incorrectly. For example, in a previous essay, the Week 10 reflection over computers and how they …show more content…
Revising is a key part to a successful paper. This is another mistake I made while inventing my papers. I did not revise enough. For example, in my Week 4 Essay, I said, “to hear the it”. This flaw could have been easily avoided with more revising. “Such careful rereading can help you eliminate irrelevant material and identify sections needing further details or examples”(Lunsford, 80). The St. Martin’s Handbook provides a great deal of information that helps immensely with editing. Forgetting words or adding them is not my only problem when it comes to revising. I often forget to put a comma, space, or period to finish a sentence. In addition, all of my problems add up to somewhat clear and concise papers, but not to their full

In order to prepare for writing a summary of Joseph Harris’s “Revising”, I first felt it was necessary to skim through the article once again to refresh my memory of the article. After re-reading the article, I tried to identify the main idea that Harris was trying to communicate. I believed that the main point could be identified through Harris’s emphasis on the fact that revising is not just correcting grammatical errors, but rather seeking out these errors was a part of a larger whole. I also referenced our in class discussion to identify the other main points of the article. From there, I worked on a general idea of what I would talk about in my summary and made note of what order I would do that in.…

A reoccurring problem I came across was that I would constantly reuse certain adjectives to describe things. It made my papers sound repetitive and uninteresting as I went through the information I wanted to present forth. I also noticed that my writing style had become extremely formal compared to my older writing pieces from the semester before. But as I continued to write, I made a conscious effort to check for these problems and find new ways to write about these topics. The revisions I made to my papers helped to better understand my writing style and make small improvements upon it over the semester.…

Have you ever gone to school and didn’t know how to write or start an essay? I’m pretty sure this all happens to us, which is why we attend school to improve our writing. Seeing myself at the age of five, I’ve always wanted to write a paper as if I was a writer. Now being a ninth grader, I have improved a lot. Improvement came in a variety of ways such as, using proper vocabulary or even spelling a word correct.…

I love the fact that the papers we wrote throughout the semester, we are able to revised them and just notice the careless mistakes we obviously did not notice while writing the paper. Revision is an effective way to show someone the mistakes they made throughout their papers because sometimes when you look at your grade you receive and the feedback you received, you tend to feel like the way he/she grades is incorrect. Throughout English 101, I have learned many rhetorical analysis strategies, the effectiveness of using appeals to attract a specific audience, citing credible sources and knowing which source is credible, etc. I always receive positive feedback but then I receive things I should improve to make my paper more effective on the next unit…

I think that paraphrasing will be the hardest for me to avoid while writing. It seems that sometimes it is hard to write or summarize something that is so well written already. The way I will work around that is to stop and re-read what I am wanting to summarize, take a few important words out of the material I am reviewing and jot those down, then go back and write what is needed to complete my sentence or idea. Once I have completed my writing, I will review and make sure I have properly cited my work. Using the guidelines discussed in our “Read Section”, and following the instructions listed on how to source correctly should avoid paraphrasing mistakes and plagiarism.…

I have noticed in my different essays while examining them that I would often excel in one part of the essay, while still failing to repair other flaws. In my Modernism essay, I incorporated evidence well, but I did not add smooth transitions, making the writing seem choppy. In my synthesis essay, I made sure to polish my transitions and include plenty of evidence to support my claims, yet the essay was focused too much on the evidence and not enough on the arguments themselves and the meaning of the evidence. Nevertheless, I fixed nearly every mistake there was in my last essay, an analysis of The Visit. I used strong diction that contributed to both imagery and my defeated tone.…

The best writing advice that I have received, came from Maggie who had been the instructor for the NUR 125 at the being of last semester. The first piece of advice was to walk away from your paper for a few minutes to get a fresh prospected and two was of course, was to have someone else proof read it. The last piece advice came from a co-worker who had stated to read your paper backwards. I felt the one that had worked the best for me was to walk away and do something else for little while before proof reading it.…

Timed writing pieces are very challenging because writing the perfect piece is far from achievable. There’s always a feeling that you could’ve added more or read it one last time but sometimes time won’t prevail. Although, a perfect piece can be achievable through revision. I believe that sometimes my mistakes in grammar stay on my papers because while I am revising and editing my paper I have trouble reading the actual words on the paper and instead read the things that my mind says it should read. For example, one of my greatest mistakes is forgetting to write some commas when the writing should have it. The problem is that in my mind I read it as if the comma is there while it is truly not, I believe that this problem extends in part out of the fact that I read a lot of books where the grammar is not the best and I always try to ignore it while I am reading. Additionally, I also need to work on eliminating my run on sentences from my writing.…
