My Mission Trip To Managua, Nicaragua

“Connection is the energy that is created between people when they feel seen, heard, and valued,” according to research professor, Brené Brown. From a young age, I enjoyed helping others, especially when I could meet new people and forge friendships. It is this love of connecting with others that motivated me to travel to Managua, Nicaragua, this past summer. While preparing for this adventure, I was told this was not going to be an ordinary mission trip. We would not build houses or schools. However, we would be building relationships, my forte.
While visiting the Cultural Center of Batahola Norte, I truly connected with the people I met, whether by playing soccer, painting faces, or dancing. There was one little boy in particular, Isaiah, with whom I strongly bonded. I first met Isaiah as he was looking for a seat at a Nicaraguan culture performance at the Cultural Center. I offered him my lap, not knowing he would be glued to my side the rest of the evening. My lack of fluency in Spanish rendered verbal communication between us difficult, but we still managed to

As I was finishing one of the books, I looked up and locked eyes with Isaiah, who was entering the room. His face lit up like the sun. His expression grew even brighter as he sprinted into my arms and gave me a warm embrace. In that moment, I knew I had created a special relationship with him, one that we would never forget.
Realizing I love to work with people, at an early stage in my life, inspired me to set goals that highlight my strengths. My goal for my life is to find ways to connect with and help people. That, to me, is the purpose of life, making connections with others. I consider this a defining characteristic of my life, a defining characteristic of who I am. If I can work together with others to make them “feel seen, heard, and valued,” then I would consider myself quite

Being able to help other people and show compassion to other people, especially when some of them are in their most vulnerable state, was something thing that I truly love and cherish. For example, being able to share stories with other women, being able to help them during their pregnancy, and being able to provide health education and parenting support after their delivery. My fondness to kids also transcends in my craft as I was able to supervise some of the newborn from time to time. Later on, because to the huge support system for one another, one by one, some of my siblings were also able to create a big milestone for themselves and their own family. As time passed by, everything was going right to the point where I think it was all a dream until my beloved father became very ill.…

Watching the youth roam around the streets asking for food and seeing families living at a dumpsite, was big impact on my perspective on life. The things I take for granted such as education, having internet, and running hot water, are not easily accessible for the people in Nicaragua. I wanted to give back somehow and this was going to be through our Community Action Project. This project was my favorite aspect about Global Glimpse.…

Nicaragua represents a major component of Latin American history in the 19 century. Although Nicaragua, Honduras, Costa Rica, and other countries in Central America are developing countries, there are three major events in its history that has shaped its economic conditions of the present. These include: the enactment of liberal policies, the William Walker affair, and production of bananas in Nicaragua. In early Nicaraguan politics, there was a polarization of beliefs between the liberals and the conservatives as in present day America.…

One of the reoccurring themes in The Jaguar Smile: A Nicaraguan Journey is the anti-United States government sentiment held by many of the people in Nicaragua, despite the country’s fascination with U.S. culture. An example of this is seen on pages thirty-six and thirty-seven of the 1997 edition of Rushdie’s book. On page thirty-six, Rushdie describes the children of Daniel Ortega running around the Ortega home with “Masters of the Universe” shirts on that portrayed He-Man and Skeletor. Then on page thirty-seven, Rushdie mentions seeing scarecrows made to look like Ronald Reagan hanging at the neck from trees, while on his way to Estelí. From these two pages, we gain a pretty accurate idea of what Nicaraguans thought about the U.S., they loved the culture and hated the government.…

All my life I have wanted to go on a mission trip to help mentor those in need. So when the opportunity came to go to Jicamarca, Peru I was extremely excited to be a part of the team being shipped off. Before going to Peru we were put through a “special” type of training. During this training we were taught what we were going to be speaking about, a skit, and a ballet dance. So when we went to Peru we would be ready for anything, at least that’s what I thought.…

I never knew a little girl from Guatemala could have such an impact on my life. We did not speak the same language, and it took two translators to find out her name: Lady Maria. While on a mission trip in this country, 9 people from my youth group traveled to Panimache, a village two hours deep in the mountains. I noticed her even before exiting the van, and instantly knew I would spend the day with her. I connect well with children, but she was different.…

As kids we look up to our parents and dream of one day being an adult like them. While we are always striving towards adulthood, it can be hard to tell when it is actually happening. There are, however, those moments or achievements significant enough that you can feel the shift in yourself from childhood to adulthood. I experienced one of these moments when I went on a service trip to the Dominican Republic last summer.…

I am choosing this because Are you sure you want to go there for humanitarian sake? This will not be like a regular vacation or a regular spring break. While there are a ton of new things to see, try, taste and do, mission trips are not for the faint of heart. Especially not to Nicaragua. Nicaragua is a poor country, and although it's been doing decently well despite Ortega being its president, there are still people who are poor in rural and secluded areas.…

For centuries, countless men and women have turned to the Bible to encounter the Lord God, and to understand better the reality of life on earth and in heaven. There's a quote that goes, "Success has nothing to do with what you gain in life or accomplish for yourself. It's what you do for others." Being the son of a minister and grandson of a pastor, I've always been raised to have a profound sense of commitment to others. During my junior year of college, I became project coordinator of a youth mentoring program called "Men on the Move". It was with this program that one of my most memorable, and rewarding, experiences took place.…
