Homeless Misconceptions

As we pulled up to the grocery store, our advisory did not really think much about what we were about to do. I just thought of it as another activity, so we grabbed some bread, chicken, and lemonade. We walked up to the counter with a whole basket full of these food items. We checked out and moved back to our bus. We put the bags in the back and hopped on the bus. We begin our journey to First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta. Our advisory walked in with hot food in both arms and took the elevator up to the 4th floor. I honestly thought that we were going to drop off the food and go, yet something much more interesting was about to happen. We sat and watched the clock as we waited for them to arrive. Our original mission was to serve food to …show more content…
I was right. Selena, the woman I had met earlier, along with 5 other women were at my table. As we conversed about each others lives, I realized that all of those stereotypes about the homeless that I had in my head were false. All of the negative misconceptions I had about them were changed into something deeper and positive. I felt as though I had already learned so much, yet I had barely talked to them. Once we finished the small talk, the woman sitting to my right began to express the misconceptions about the homeless. Her name was _____. She said to us,
“A lot of people believe that homeless people are all on drugs or addicted to alcohol. Most of the time that isn’t true, some people are just in a bad situation at that point and it’s hard for them to get out of it. Some people are homeless for the sole fact that their house burned down. We are not all stupid, or just to lazy to get a job either. I went to college and got straight A’s in high school. I have a job, but my ex-husband stop paying for childcare. I cannot balance four kids on my own even though I still work everyday, so don’t judge people just because they are homeless.”
She and the rest of the group continued to preach to us about the truth about homelessness and their own personal stories. I gained so much more deeper knowledge about how it actually is to be in that

Argument Essay In the article “Charity means you don’t pick and choose” by Patricia O’hara, the author shows a contrast between the giving and the poor. The article explains how a little boy and his mother were stopped by a “homeless person” and how he asked for his “doggie bag” if the little boy wasn’t going to eat his left over food. The mother reacts by grasping her sons’ hand, which gives an impression that she feels vulnerable around a homeless person. This is contrasted when another group of people walked past and made an remark “It’d be better if they got a job,” which shows that second group of people have no respect for the homeless and judge them straight away.…

On a blazing hot afternoon, I was with my Peer Ministry. It seemed like our whole group, interacting with the sizable population of homeless on the streets of Riverside, CA, was working like a fast food crew; we were distributing food from our cars at a superhuman pace. This activity seemed like any ordinary job our group did together — until I handed a brown paper bag to a homeless African American man. His expression registered shock. He put his hand on my shoulder and said, “Son, how did you know I needed help?”…

We began as I believe all days should begin; in the presence of the Lord. After a talk and prayer, we headed off; some of us on busses and some in cars. I had picked to go to the Food Pantry the Tuesday before, although I did not foresee any of the events that would happen there at that time. I had thought it’d be some gigantic warehouse with food stacked on shelves and we would have to move it out of there to an even more gigantic warehouse. This was not the case.…

“I Told My Son…” The other day while I was driving, my son saw a homeless man and have asked me that “how can I know which homeless person become homeless because he was a bad person”, he thinks homeless people becomes homeless because they are bad or they did something bad. If he asked me that question before I took this class my answer to him would be completely different than what I just told him. I am ashamed to say that I used to think that people become homeless or fail in life because they have done something wrong, they did not go to school, or they do not want to work, the usual stereotypes. However, this class completely opened my eyes and my perspectives on so many things have changed.…

To be caring means, “The work or practice of looking after those unable to care for themselves.” Two of the main people who have really taught me what means and what it looks like to be caring would be my mom, my dad, and my grandpa. They have always been a great influence to me by always encouraging me to try to be caring towards anyone and everyone, especially those in need. Their determination to be caring daily is what inspires me to strive to be the kindest, most caring person I can be. For example, my dad’s generosity towards anyone he sees who is in need and how they react when he tries his best to go out of his way and help them shows how effective it really is when people kind-heartedly help eachother out.…

Diversity Portfolio Most people walk blindlessly through life, every day, oblivious to their surroundings. We are often so caught up in our own “world” (e.g. social life, work, bills, and stress), that we fail to realize what is happening within the “real world”. However, if we actually open our eyes and see the world through the lenses of other; we would not see things just as black and white, short or tall, peacefulness or chaos. We would see what I like to call, “chaotic beauty”. What I mean by that, is our society has become so diverse (e.g. ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, political views, and the spoken language), that it is being met with resistance, causing chaos and division among Americans.…
