I applied during my junior year at Arkansas State University (ASU) in Jonesboro, Ar. I was excited to apply for the BSW program at ASU. Unfortunately, I was not accepted into the program for the Fall 2015 at first. I was devastated, and I had cried as soon as I got the news. Therefore, I decided to change my major to interdisciplinary studies. I knew that I could graduate with my bachelor’s degree, and still apply to the MSW standard two - year program. I consider myself an ambitious person. I believe that is a great quality to have as a social worker. I must help clients to the highest extent of my power, despite adversity. Thankfully, I received an email from the social work department during the summer. They explained that they expanded the BSW program, and decided to accept me. The field of social work will allow me to enjoy having a career motivating, and helping others to become self-sufficient.
During my first semester of my field placement I had the opportunity to intern at two different placements. My first placement was at the City Youth of Ministries, and my current one is the Beck Pride Center for veterans. My former supervisor resigned due to personal reasons; consequently, I was upset with the adjustment at first. There was one female client I wanted to work with closely. My supervisor brought her in and, started questioning her about some bruises she had on her legs. There were abrasions on her thigh that looked suspicious. She confessed to my supervisor that they were bruises from her mother spanking her. As a social worker we are required to keep our sessions confidential between clients, unless there is self-harm, or harm to others presented. “The general expectation that social workers will keep information confidential does not apply when disclosure is necessary to prevent serious, foreseeable, and imminent harm to a client or other identifiable person” (NASW, 2008, para.15).
