My Migration To America

Improved Essays
I moved from Indonesia to America approximately ten years ago. My mother’s motive to bring my older brother and I to America was to attained a higher quality of education aiming for prosperity and life of ease. It was definitely a struggle because we didn’t come from a wealthy family, along with my mom being a single mother combined, it results in a financial barrier to achieve the expected goal. Additional to that, our family were denied when we applied for citizenship, but were granted with Withholding of Removal instead. We are able to live and work in America legally, but unable to receive the benefits of citizens. That lead to another obstacle in regards to affording college tuition. I’ve always wanted to be a nurse since high school

As a first generation undocumented college student there is great privilege and pride in attending the University of California, Santa Barbara. However with that there is also many obstacles and struggles that I have faced in order to survive and thrive in this institution, one of them is my need for financial aid. Coming from a low-income, single mother household I do not rely on my mother for financial support because I already know she struggles to feed my siblings and pay their bills. As a result I am sending my mother money on a monthly basis in order for her to complete rent for the month and afford groceries. Due to the fact that I am constantly sending my mother and household money in order to contribute to their survival, I have been working two part-time jobs while still being a full-time student in order to make my needs to be met as well.…

I admire my parents for having the courage to come to this country and start over from zero. For most of their lives, my parents worked in the fields picking fruit. It is a physically demanding job that pays very little.…

Many people characterize their home as safe, secure, or at least comforting. My home was a bit … different. After leaving their home in Nigeria, my parents had to jump from home to home constantly moving me and my family until they could learn how to properly settle in America. My parents were very caring and helpful and kept trying to move us to places where we would have a chance at success. I was born in the capital of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa, the place where all my best memories live. My mother gave birth to her first child at the age of 18 then to me a year later, she hadn’t finished high school so she trusted my grandparents to raise us in the city while she went to work in another. There was never a dull moment in our grandparents home, we would play countless games in the water when it rained and the yard would get flooded or get chased around by our guard dog as my family would watch laughing despite my fear of dogs. One of the things I will always be grateful for is growing up in Ethiopia, my days were filled with happiness and adventure that I will forever cherish. Moving to America was a drastic change for my brother and I, we would spend countless nights crying homesick, asking to go back home.…
