My Migrant Idol Anthropologist Ellen Zimmerman There are certain people in this world that make you want to talk. Some people cause you to talk out of nervousness and need to impress them, while others have such a personality that you talk because you feel the ease in their attention and understanding. Ellen Zimmerman, a professor in Anthropology at Framingham State University, makes me want to tell her my life story, and then turn around and listen to hers. The first day I met Zimmerman she was talking to me and my fellow classmates at our accepted student’s day. I made it a point to talk to her that day, and once classes started I make it a point to talk with her every day in class after that. When people ask you who you idolize, or who your role model is, the answer tends to be something like: my mother/father, a sibling, a famous person, and even sometimes an author. …show more content…
It was this experience that allowed her to tell me the depths of her interest for other people and their ways of living. She started working at Framingham State University, in September of 1990. She worked part-time, for she was busy with her newborn. Fast forward to present time and she is a full time professor teaching classes such as: Global Issues and Anthropology, Cultural Anthropology, Language and Culture, Native American Culture, etc. She also works as a head in her department. Most of her days consist of prepping for class and grading. Most people do not understand how much being a professor requires upgrading their current teachings. Culture is always changing, and Zimmerman has to change with it. Looking ahead Zimmerman hopes to get a writing project in soon. She loves to write, and hasn’t gotten the chance to write as much as she hoped. After being the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs for so many years Zimmerman just started teaching again last spring, and her time has been consumed with students and
