My Mexican Background

Improved Essays
Being a Mexican-American and a child of illegal immigrants has allowed me to have a perspective on life to differ from some of my peers. My Mexican background has brought much diversity and openness to other cultures and beliefs. Being born in the U.S has provided me with countless opportunities and has greatly increased my patriotism for such a special country. Both of these background qualities, made me face much discrimination and only inspired me to seek full equality without discrimination. The aim of balance and peace has influenced me to help those around me. I have learned to put others first. This quality of getting satisfaction from helping others will not only contribute to my personal education as well as benefit my interactions

Starting at a young age I was taught to access and learn about all the resources available to me as much as I can. My family members encouraged me to explore new ideas and values in order to make an effort to excel through my education and community. Eventually I become the person that if someone needed help I was able to assist them in any way I could whether it was here at Quinnipiac, home, or just hanging out friends. I believe that my resourcefulness and capability to help another find their path is the real strength in helping others adjust to a new environment and discover new ways to cultivate their personal…

Growing up I faced many obstacles coming from an immigrant family. Never did I think I could overcome the obstacles and say that the little girl who went to one of the worst rated elementary schools in the area was now a rising senior at George Mason University. I grew up with both my parents and three sisters, and in my eyes we were an average “normal” family. I never saw my parents struggle or felt like I was missing anything, and not until I was older did I understand our situation. I did not fully grasp that my parents were “different” because they were immigrants until I realized they could not help me with my homework, engage in a conversation with my teachers, nor participate in all the things my classmates parents did.…

Being Hispanic means a lot to me because it has definitely played a major role in the man I am growing up to be. The level of humbleness shown throughout my family has really taught me to respect anyone no matter what background they came from. Growing, I was very open to having different kinds of friends especially during high-school. During that period of my education, I came to find that there are a lot of judgmental individuals who tend to pick out the worst in people without getting to know them. As a Hispanic, I knew that I had to give everyone a chance and welcome them with open arms.…

working with Latino families especially immigrants is going to be my strength as a counselor. It will be easy to relate to them because of my own culture. At times, however, these same assumptions can create tension in my therapeutic relationships because some people do not fit my perception of issues in immigrant families. Instead I need to come with a clean slate and let the family fill me in before making any assumptions about them. While the need to prove myself could be a hard pattern of behavior to break, I believe in my ability to observe these thoughts in my interactions.…

I helped Hillary, a young refugee girl from Africa; attempt to formulate a sentence with the word “truthful” in it. She looked up at me with inquiring eyes, asking, “What does ‘truth’ mean?” I tried to come up with a definition, something that would make sense. Coming from South Los Angeles, close to Watts, and raised by an undocumented, working class, single mother of Hispanic descent revealed to me the idea of how society is, for the most part, constructed to benefit some individuals over others. Due to the fact that I am considered a minority student in a low income urban atmosphere, I lived most of my life in an ocean of disadvantage. As any individually usually would, I had and continue to have bountiful amounts of goals that I hope have or hope to one day accomplish. Just to name a few, become a first generation high school graduate, attend a 4 year university and become financially stable. I faced many barriers and limitations as I attempted to fulfill my desires because of my social location,…
