I use my personal tablet or computer to read the class material, and am often tempted to spend time on social media while trying to study. This results in time lost to study and my grades have been negatively affected.
One method I could implement to help improve my study skills and test performance would be to turn off or reduce distractions. Instead of studying at home, utilizing the local town library or the college library may be more beneficial. A library provides a quiet and focused environment that includes immediate resources for learning and fewer distractions. In addition, another way to eliminate distractions would be to turn off my cell phone during my study time. This would reduce the temptation to spend time on social media or send text messages.
Another method would be to join a study group with students who use better and more effective study strategies. According to Dr. Chew of Samford University (2011), “Remember group study as a business meeting. There should be a goal for the meeting and an agenda. Everyone should come prepared and ready to contribute” (Chew, 2011). All members should read the material and come to the study group with any questions they feel are the most essential to review.
