My Mentoring Experience Paper

JCAP mentoring experience has been truly valuable for me. In my mentoring experience I enjoyed mentoring because I believe that mentoring is beneficial to the mentee as well as the mentor. For the mentor because they gain experience for their future career as an educator and keeping in mind that the youth is our future. Likewise the student gets advice and motivation and thrives in school academics as well as outside of school. Moreover, I had the opportunity to relate educational psychology concepts to real students. One thing I found corresponding to educational psychology was that the students were in the stage or crisis that Erik Erikson named the Identity vs. Role confusion crisis. At this stage adolescents are at risk of role confusion, this means, they are uncertain “as to what behaviors will elicit a favorable reaction from others” (Snowman & McCown, 2013). Adolescents at this stage moderate their behavior accordingly to how they think the adult will react to “favorably” (Snowman & McCown, 2013). …show more content…
For example, while we had our chats she would tell me about her week and the activities she participated in. As she got to know me she would moderate her language to avoid me correcting her, she did not like to be reprimanded to not to use certain words. When she accidentally blurt them out she would apologize. Each week her bad choice of words declined considerably and today it is rare for her to blurt out a bad word or say something that she knows would not pass with me.
