My Mentee Tyler: Personal Narrative

Improved Essays
Many people ask me “What have you done to your mentee to change him?” I tell everyone, “Everything in my power and all my knowledge to make him the best he can be.” My mentee Tyler is a warrior and doesn’t take a bad grade for an answer. The impact that I hope to have on my mentee is him becoming a smarter person when it comes to handling school work and social aspects, but making him become someone that others can look up to him and say “How’d you do it Tyler?” I want Tyler to have more motivation and study for each class 30 minutes everyday and make a schedule to balance out his social and academic opportunities. That impact would make me feel like a much better person and keep Tyler’s confidence level up to which he can do anything with …show more content…
In other words, I would like my mentee to takeaway from this experience, whatever dilemma he has or is in remember what I said “Only hard work can grant you something you would want.” He can takeaway that many people in this world can be his social support when his academics aren’t going his way to provide that support to distribute a much better mindset to keep him going. I motivate my mentee by saying that those grades can increase and to continue studying. Set goals for him and don’t let anyone put him down to his full potential because I know he is a smart kid who knows what he is doing to make his life better and academics better. I give him advice like “Go over your notes, study for grades that may be lower than you expected and tell him some jokes that will make him less stressed than he may already be.” Motivation is very important for a mentee because some may have low self-esteems that can destroy that motivation that can process them to get on the passing mark. Lastly I can incorporate a “Growth mindset” to motivate my mentee by making him believe better impressions or ways to grow as an individual and have better ideas or practices to have efficient studying. I want my mentee to look at challenges as a growth lesson

Most parents tend to think that intelligence and talent are the key to success for their children. However, many researches nowadays points out that there are many factors others than smartness along to make children successful. Among those theories, Angela Duckworth‘s “Grit” about hard working and Carol S. Dweck’s “Growth Mind-set” about not giving up stand out the most. These two theories, while having differences, can be surprisingly similar as they are based on a perspective about how students think. Duckworth identifies “Grit” as “sticking with things over the very long term until you master them” or “resilience in the face of failure or adversity”.…

Dweck’s article, “The Secret to Raising Smart Kids,” we can use that she makes a compelling argument for her Scientific American audience through the use of rhetorical strategies. It also allows for the a child to learn from setbacks and if the child wished to correct said setbacks they would have a positive environment to purse that. And when students learned through a structured program that they could “grow their brains” and increase their intellectual abilities, they did…
