During my internship at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center (STC), I gained more confidence in my decision in eventually pursuing a career in health care, either through being a researcher or a physician. I first started my internship at the University of Maryland STC in my senior year of high school as a requirement for my magnet program. The internship was a volunteer position but we performed basic tasks such as stocking each bay with supplies and saline solution, retrieving blood from the blood bank when needed, and providing blankets and socks for incoming patients. I never paid attention to the importance of these tasks until one specific incident.…

I also assisted with child abuse and neglect investigations (CAN), intake, individualized service plans (ISPs), comprehensive family assessments (CFAs), entered data into Family, Adult, and Child Tracking System (FACTS), and continued to monitor the families I serve through home visitations. My favorite part of the internship experience outside of increasing the morale around the office, has been to work with families through the ISP process. This process is put in place in efforts to reunify the family. It gives me great joy to watch the family work on a plan to help them gain custody of their children.…

The following year, I took the Pharmacy Technician class in order to branch a little out of the medical field and explore pharmacy, but upon completion of the course, I felt that a career in medicine was the best for me; from my Pharmacy Technician experience, however, I learned valuable skills about working in a workplace with other bright minds in close proximity, which would prove beneficial in any career in medicine. As a phlebotomist, I often see the best and worst things that can happen in the hospital.…

Patient filing took place majority of the time, filing including taking patient files alphabetizing by name and organization by type. Types varied from nurse’s notes to massage therapy to medication for every patient that Heartland Flint/Lapeer cares for. Once all the notes were entered into files I was responsible for service reports, which is an inventory of every patients file to ensure that dates and times of patient interaction matched the information entered into the service report data base by the hospice staff. Another task that was a major part of my internship was entering…

As a nursing student doing my clinical rotation, I witnessed an older nurse bullying a brand new hired nurse. The new nurse was about to start an IV (Intravenous) line but missed the vein twice, the older nurse yelled, “Didn’t they teach you how to start an IV line in nursing school?!” and proceeded to start an IV line on the other arm. The new nurse rushed out the client’s room and was bursting in tears. At first, I did not know the saying, “Nurses eat their young” but after what I have just seen, these words have been embedded in me since that clinical experience.…

Although, I knew about the situation in Flint and could infer that this would have some major effects on the people in the town researching more opened my eyes to many community problems that affect the population's health tremendously.
