Grandmother Interview

I interviewed my maternal grandmother, Mary Sue Varner. She was born on February 16, 1933, that makes her eight three years old. She was the oldest daughter of eight children. She has pretty much lived in the same town for her entire life, but would not change that for anything. She has five children, thirteen grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. I had a wonderful time listening to my grandmother tell me about her life. She had some difficult times, but the good times always made up for the bad times.
The first question I asked my grandmother was “What is your greatest hope for your children and grandchildren?” Her answer was one that I could almost quote. She said her greatest hope is that her children and grandchildren would always …show more content…
She said that as a child they would always eat together every night. That was a very important part of their family’s day. That is the time where they would discuss their day with each other and any important information that the family would need to discuss together. She said this is why family dinners are so important to her now. We have over 40 people in our family and we all gather for holidays and special occasions. We just got together for thanksgiving and had a great time. We all enjoy each other’s company and we realize that these times may be dwindling due to family member’s locations and schedules. My grandmother has always dreamed of having a dining room table big enough for all of us to sit at and eat together. One of her best is a caramel cake. This cake is one of our family’s favorites and no one has been able to master it like my grandmother. Like most older women, my grandmother does not measure very many things. She has been making her recipes for so long she just knows when something is right by the texture or consistency of the batter. She said her favorite thing to make is fries apple pies. She makes a mixture of apples, cinnamon, and several other ingredients. She fills a pie crust, folds it in half, and seals the sides. She fries the pies on each side until the dough is cooked. This is one item that does not last long around our family. It is also one of those items that can be smelt as soon as you walk in the room. I personally enjoy cooking so I hope to one day spend some time with my grandmother learning the secret techniques to mastering these and many other recipes of
