My Marching Band Leadership

Improved Essays
The most effective of use of my leadership skills occurred when I was a member of marching band. During my band career I was both section and wood wind captain. This role put me in charge of a large amount of the band members and gave me more responsibility than I had previously experienced. There was one particular year when the band had undergone a number of changes. Our music director, band director, professional staff, marching director, and many other authoritative figures we had worked with left and the band took a new path. I along with many of band colleagues was shocked and wholly unprepared for many of these changes, but I understood that there was still a job to be done. We were still a band and we still had to march on the field

My most significant leadership experience would be when I was in the Girls Varsity Tennis Team. I had been in the tennis team during my highschool years, for 2 years. During that time I learned a lot about being a leader, such as what it means to lead others, and what qualities a leader should have. When I first started playing tennis I started at the position on 2nd doubles, to me I took it as that I was not good enough to play against an opponent by myself on the court. Which was entirely true, because when I began playing I was not any good whatsoever.…

I now had the title of section leader in the band, and was also an upperclassmen of the football team. It wasn’t exactly as easy as it seemed from those of the past. The sophomores thought they knew everything just because they had been there one year before, and the freshman thought they were hot shit for making it through middle school. It was painful to witness the underclassmen of football only squat halfway down, or the underclassmen of band march out of time, and have your advice go in one ear and right out the other. I decided that I needed some type of legitimacy as a leader.…

Being a section leader in band has not only taught me the skills necessary for leading a section of the band, but it has taught me the skills necessary for being an effective leader in general. The role I inherited as a section leader was to oversee and teach my section, complete any jobs that the band needed done, and uphold the morality of the band. Throughout the marching season, I gradually learned how to do this, and I learned how to be a better leader in general. To begin, our band director frequently emphasizes that marching band is a group effort, and the whole group is only as strong as its weakest individual. I find this statement to be true for marching band as well as any activity involving multiple people.…

My past leadership responsibilities have taught me that admitting my mistakes and showing humanity betters myself as well as those around me. My peers trust and have more faith in me because I have demonstrated humanity to them instead of acting as if I am perfect. This allows fellow students to approach me for advice when they have problems because they know that I am willing to help them as well as be their voice if they do not feel comfortable presenting the conflict. I should be chosen for Camp because my commitment, work ethic, and dedication to my school, community, and athletics have awarded and prepared me for this opportunity. My leadership experience began when my supervisor and his colleagues had an important meeting to attend and had no one sitting in on the office for intake office hours, so he asked me and another intern, Isaiah, to sit in from 9 AM-3PM. My supervisor taught us the main component of this position in 10 minutes. At first, I was nervous because I was new to the agency and it was my first time performing front desk duties. But after a couple of clients I began to get more comfortable and confident with the process because I had performed similar duties when I was in my cubicle. At this moment I felt like I was a leader because I was put in a position where I had minimum training, but still could take control of the office duties, and according to my supervisor, my performance level was beyond expectations.…
