Albert Einstein once said decades ago, "Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving." In my eyes, this quote encapsulates who I am as a person, one who requires constant movement while maintaining structure. I am Christina Zhang, and my mandala emphasizes five different symbols, each coinciding to form one image--a yin yang sign.
At first glance, one might notice the yin yang first- the big picture. This symbol, as many know, represents a balance in nature. It represents the two opposing forces in the universe-- such as day and night or life and death. The outermost circle that encompasses the inner structure represents the universe as a whole. It symbolizes the calm, yet dynamic aspects of life. Water can be still, calming nerves. It is also dynamic. At the beach, you notice that every wave is different-- some high, some low, some rough, some gentle. Water also has unprecedented flexibility. It takes any shape one decides. In liquid form, it's spread to fill any container. Frozen, it will take the shape of the mold, but will eventually melt back to its original form. When boiled, the vapor rises and fills the room. These ideas illustrates my day to day life. Everyday is different filled with a new sense of energy. One day can be great and then terrible the next, but it also shows my power to overcome any hardships that may come my way.
The moon symbolizes change and development. It's phases represent the cycle of life. It starts as a new moon representing infancy and a waning moon representing the end of life, the eternal sleep. The phases could also show the fluctuation of life and it's never ending changes. The moon is also associated with wisdom, knowledge, and clarity, thus showing my thirst for knowledge and the unknown. They surround me with warmth and love and play one of the most important factors in my life. The ‘sun’ is the light at the end of the tunnel, guiding me to happiness and clarity. It offers strength and power - and is literally the base of life.
However, as one might notice, there is light in the dark, symbolizing that one cannot exist without the other. Without light, no one would recognize the darkness. There is always good in evil and vice versa. Yin and yang counteract one another, and create a balance.
Last but not least, we have the clouds. Clouds are symbolic of independence and constant change. No one person is able to control clouds. Clouds come and go as they please in any shape or form. They are the epitome of an independent spirit who does not care about anyone's opinions. Similarly, they also represent a creative, carefree nature. Clouds can also represent the people in my life. Some come and go quickly, but some like to linger as long as they can.
