My Love Of Reading Has Influenced My Writing

Superior Essays
When I was little, before I could read, I visited my grandparents house in rural South Dakota. My family usually visited on Sundays after church where we would eat the meal my grandma had prepared, after which my grandpa would always read a devotion. I loved hearing my grandpa read. His voice was calming and deep, his words flowed together, only interrupted by the occasional pause to clear his throat. I loved hearing him read so much I began to grab all the books I could find in the little cupboard in the kitchen to have him read to me. I’m sure that he grew tired of me climbing off his lap to grab more books, but he never once complained or told me that he had enough. His endless patience and soothing voice as he read to me was inspired me to learn to read. It is because of him that I grew to love reading. Throughout my life, books have not only provided a way to express my independence, but they have also encouraged me to improve my writing.
Learning how to read in kindergarten was the best thing for me. I wanted to learn so that one day I could read to my grandpa just as he read to me. As time progressed, those Sunday visits developed into my grandpa listening patiently and assisting me as I read. On Grandparents Day in first

My vocabulary has expanded and my style of writing has been heavily influenced by books I have read. In the fourth grade, my class read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. The book contained new vocabulary that we would learn with each chapter, not to mention C.S. Lewis’ style is complex for a fourth grader. However, I found myself loving how well put together and educated his writing was. On the other hand, an issue arose when it came to write my own papers and stories, because I hated that it never sounded as put together as the books I read. Nevertheless, as I continued in school and my love of reading grew, the quality of my writing grew as

I have been reading ever since I could remember. I was read to when I was little as well. I do not recall learning to read, only that when my mother sat me down to start learning how to read, I already knew how. All throughout elementary school, I participated in the Accelerated Reader (also called AR) program. I loved it because you would read books, and then takes quizzes on those books.…

Throughout life we all learn to read. Maybe on our own or maybe we were read to as a child. As a youth, I was not read to by a parent or grandparent. My brother Dale read to me when I was little as far as I can remember. Furthermore, when middle school began, I started reading on my own, but only one book made a lasting impression.…

It’s interesting, really, to see some of my old papers from middle and high school. I look back and laugh at the time, maybe around the third grade, when my classmates and I would groan and complain about having to write an ENTIRE PARAGRAPH. Now, after years of writing significantly longer academic papers that stretch far beyond a simple paragraph, my style and the depth of my topics have evolved based on what I’ve read. The most important pastime for anyone who wishes to write, unsurprisingly, is to read a wide variety of material, starting at a young age. Studies have shown that children who read more than their peers exhibit a larger vocabulary as well as more complex writing styles.…

Beginning from grade school through middle and high school, we learn how to read and write as we grow. More importantly, we learn how to grab and hold onto many things; the illusions that we aim to achieve, called dreams. The drive to push and better yourself to grasp onto unexpected possibilities, we call opportunities. The belief and confidence that you hold within you, we call faith. Independence as your hope, in all experiences that you’ll be able to make something towards your future.…

My first memory of reading was when I was little, about 4 or 5, and my mom would read to me when I was going to bed. By far my favorite book that she would read to me was “Where The Wild Things Are”. I loved the way the booked looked with the faded looking colors that made it look old and I loved the pictures of the wild things and how the kid was the king and everyone listened to him and I just loved it.…

As a child around the age of three and four my parents would read to me all the time because they say it was there way of calming me. They would read to me every night and during the afternoon when it was time to nap. They would read princesses books to me all the time like Cinderella. I don't have children but when I do I plan to make it a habit and read to them as often as I can. I do have two nieces and a nephew every time I have a chance and my five year old niece sometimes even tries to read along with me as she is learning how to read.…

All people have life experiences which influence their understanding of reading and writing. Some of them turn out to have a great impact on the world such as Sigmund Freud- who published a multitude of books developing our understanding of psychology, or Shakespeare- who has widely shaped drama writing and even the English language. I too have a considerable amount of experiences that shaped my writing, not enough to change the world, but enough to where I could share with you the ones that influenced me the most. My first experience was in my childhood.…

My earliest memories of literacy take me back to the times I had with my grandmother. I should begin by stating she is not grandma, she is now and forever will be my Oma. As a little girl when my parents were at work, I would spend my days at my grandparents, and in particular with my Oma. I loved it at my grandparents as a child, and I still love being there to this day; it is like my second home. My grandparents live in a house they built on a lake in White Pigeon, Michigan.…

Most of these literacy narratives are going to be about how most of these students hated reading and writing, but explained a big creative story of how they learned to love it and now live and breathe writing. That's not me. Ever since I was little i've never been very good at writing or reading. When I was younger my Grandparents and Mom always made up fiction stories rather than reading them. Since I had always had the passion to be able to read, and be read to, I was pretty natural when it came to actually being taught how to read. We always had “guided reading time” which is when we would be put into reading groups based on our reading levels. At first I didn’t really understand the concept of the different levels, but I soon figured it out. Mom, I remember, had pointed out one day that I was at a higher level of reading than some others in my class. I was extremely proud of this.…

All my life, I have loved listening and reading words, watching them float out of a person’s mouth or off of a page, forming into images. As a child, every morning, every night, was spent listening… listening to my mom, dad, or ba (my grandmother) read to me. I would walk up to them with my tiny toes and button nose and give them a book, whether it be Goodnight Moon or Runaway Bunny by Margaret Brown, or a book by Eric Carle, most likely The Secret Birthday Message. As I have gotten older, I have started to appreciate reading alone, and analysing books by myself. From about four years old, reading word after word, carefully digesting them in one by one has come natural to me.…

Where most children’s first utterance is “mama,” mine was “book.” In preschool, as other kids scampered around Toys "R" Us, I devoured the shelves of Barnes & Noble. Some go weak in the knees at the scent of chocolate lava cake, but the new book smell has always been my aroma of choice. By the time kindergarten rolled around, my teachers had granted me the magical title of "classroom reader. " As I read to my classmates at lunchtime, books, like pixie dust, enabled me to soar.…
