Major Application Essay

My love of mathematics began before my formal education started. My mother tells me that by age four, I was capable of basic addition and subtraction. She would use Skittles and M&Ms to illustrate her point, and I quickly picked up the concept. I excelled in mathematics through elementary and middle school, resulting in me being a year ahead of many other students. High school rolled around and I continued my rigorous math classes, ending with me earning credits in statistics and the prerequisites for calculus.

I have wanted to pursue the arts for a while but feared abandoning my mathematical skills. Although this major focuses less on mathematics as its engineering relative, it emphasises fine arts and design, which interest me more. Here, I can expand on my previous experiences and interests. I plan to switch from undecided engineering to this major either this semester or early next semester as I would like more time to further research the major before I fully commit. Still, I have a feeling that this is the major I want to pursue as it combines my talents and interests into one field of study that will help decide my future plans.
I entered college unsure of almost everything I did. Neither of my parents attended college, and I was too shy to ask for help from counselors in high school. Being valedictorian, I was afraid to ask for help when my peers seemed to have everything planned out. I kept telling myself that I had plenty of time to decide what direction I wanted my life to take and, in the meantime, I let others decide for me. I have since worked to regain control of my life by trusting myself more and knowing when to ask for
