My Love For Exploration Research Paper

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been mad for adventure. As a child, I liked to imagine I’d be the world’s greatest explorer; to this day, my parents still call me “Professor Jones”. My love for exploration and discovery is what has led to me to what I want to major in: a double major in anthropology and biology. In one hike you can get it all: redwood groves, wildflower-filled meadows, rocky outcroppings, cascading creeks and sweeping views. This is Sonoma County at its best, the Pomo Canyon Trail, a 4.5-mile stretch between a wooded campground and Shell Beach. Naturally, unless you bring two cars, enjoying the entire trail would cause you to rack up nine miles. If you start at the Pomo Canyon Campground, you might have to add another mile, as when I hiked it, the campground was closed, and I do not know if it is permanent or seasonal.…

Colombia is named after Christopher Columbus, even though he never set foot on Colombian soil. It was Alonso de Ojeda, one of Columbus' companions on his second voyage, who was the first European to set foot on the land in 1499. He briefly explored the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and was astonished by the wealth of the local Indians. Their gold and their stories about fabulous treasures inland gave birth to the myth of El Dorado, a mysterious kingdom abundant in gold. In its most extreme interpretation, El Dorado was believed to be a land of gold mountains littered with emeralds.…

I would like to greatly thank you for your kind generosity in granting me as a recipient of the Gerry Stutz Scholarship. Having this scholarship will enormously help ease off the worry of paying for college and it will also carry me forward to my dreams of working within the Environmental Science field. As a child, my parents have instilled in me to understand our affect on the environment and as the human population climbs towards eight billion it is my goal to to work towards conservational and environmental solutions, in order to help those who survive off of their environment. A personal goal of mine is to help the villages of my parents who were born in Peru. Educating the village members and using the learned material I have received…

The Geological Society of America’s news site provides a variety of geological news sources from research papers to a live twitter feed. The purpose of the site is to provide a hub where someone can find recent research and current events in geology. Most of the content being shown focuses on geology. However, some posts will be heavily focused on biology, chemistry, or physics since geology can rely on knowledge in any of those disciplines. An example of this is the research on “Sulfur-oxidizing bacteria prior to the Great Oxidation Event from the 2.52 Ga Gamohaan Formation of South Africa.”…

Tears of joy streaming down my aunt's face, being squeezed by relatives for group pictures, tropical heat causing sweat to form in the small of my back; Regardless of how uncomfortable it is to step out of my comfort zone, my family's annual trips to Cuba are something I've always looked forward to. In the year of 1999, I was born in Cabaiguán, Cuba. If it had been up to my mother, I would have been born in the United States. Immigration laws required us to stay for at least six months after my birth before coming to America. Despite us moving to the United States, my parents always made sure I didn't forget where I came from.…

During the age of exploration, the spice trade was in full swing and European countries were searching for new trade routes to India that would make travel faster, easier, and less expensive. One of the reasons why exploration occurred at this point in history is because of their new technological prowess which enabled them to advance in their sailing abilities. The navigational compass was one of the many new inventions to emerge in the sailing industry. The emergence of new technology generated new wealth but it was the invention of the printing press that made it possible to spread new information faster than before. This created a sense of competition which led nations to push themselves to advance in technology and to create more national wealth.…

Who lived in America before the immigrants came? It was the Native Americans, and after them were the European settlers and explorers. When the white settlers came, they were friendly with the Native Americans and vice versa. At least, it looked like that on the surface; secretly, the Europeans, including Christopher Columbus wanted to enslave the Native Americans. Native Americans were tortured and killed, treaties were violated, and fights and raids broke out.…

I’m privileged to write this letter of recommendation for my dear friend and former professor, James Newman. I was fortunate enough to have Mr. Newman as a world geography teacher during my freshmen year of high school. The first time I met him I had no idea that we would develop a long-lasting friendship, something that went further than the casual student-professor interactions. As a recent immigrant from Mexico, my first year in high school represented a big challenge as I struggled to adapt to the new culture and society. Nevertheless, it was Newman’s classroom where I finally felt confident and assertive of myself.…

I have always been interested in learning about environmental problems and how to do my part in helping them. However, I was unaware of the true devastation of deforestation in places like Puerto Rico until I visited last spring. A part of my school’s curriculum is Interim, which is an opportunity for every student to get off campus and learn in a hands-on way. My junior year, I went to Puerto Rico to learn about deforestation. I went knowing very little of the impact deforestation has on tropical ecosystems; however, I was soon immersed in the jungle- living in tents, going to the bathroom in a humanure toilet, and volunteering every day by building path and planting trees.…
