My Love For Basketball

Improved Essays
Sometime from now I hope to be a basketball coach. I’m very good with kids and over the years my patience has improved. I’ve worked with kids before as a camp counselor with the City of Garland for the Stars camp. It is a summer camp for underprivileged families. Many parents do not have the money to hire baby sitters or afford certain places that watch kids, while they go to work. The City of Garland came up with the camp so that parents would be able to afford a place where their kids can be safe and watched while they attend work. As I worked the camp over the years, I realized my love for working with kids. I also realized that I am pretty good with them and they enjoy me. Besides that, I am also a great basketball player, I am very confident in myself and I have been playing since I was 5 years old. I am left handed and I really love that I am because it is an advantage. Basketball is a very strong passion of mine and I have always thought about coaching it. Where and who I should coach was always huge problem for me to discover. I decided my love for children and my passion for basketball could merge together and that is where I brainstormed the idea to start out coaching children.

Also, I have had plenty of coaches in my years that I still have a connection with. Whatever I do not know or understand completely, I could go to them for help or advice. My father also played basketball when he was younger and knows a lot so I always have him for help. When it comes to the children, I have my experience as working as a camp counselor, whereas for the job I must know a lot about children. During the job I do have to teach them things sometimes, whether it is something as simple as spelling or a life

Coaching youth basketball has given me an opportunity to help young kids learn to love basketball. In Coach Rick’s after school basketball program we stress positivity, teamwork, and inclusion rather than the success of the individual. Mistakes are encouraged, not looked down upon. Helping kids with difficult attitudes become team-oriented and positive carries beyond the basketball court. Coaching in the same program that I played in has helped shape my attitude towards everything: positivity, learning from failure, and bringing up those less talented than others.…
