Although he doesn’t have a speech problem anymore, he did back then. So during his classes, they would excuse him so that he could go to a separate speech class. In the school’s efforts to help him, they didn’t realize they were actually hurting him. The time he missed in class because of speech was causing him to fall behind and get confused. Before he knew it, his grades began to slip. My parents started becoming concerned, and came to the conclusion that it would be best for him to attend the public school nearby. He loved the school we went to and he had already made so many friends there. Leaving Nativity meant leaving the soccer team, leaving his friends, and leaving me. Year after year, I remember his friends constantly coming up to me asking “when is Andrew coming back? Is he coming back soon? We all miss him”. I also remember not having an answer. As much as I wanted my brother to come back to school with me, I wasn’t sure that he would come back. He would always pester my parents about returning to school but they just brushed it off and told him if he improved, he could come back. As much as we all wanted him to come back to Nativity, it wasn’t looking like it was a part of the plan.
As time went on, he began to really like his new school. It was right up the street from us, so he already knew quite a bit of the kids that went there. He was making all new friends and doing really well in school. At the time, I was slightly bitter about the whole situation. Everyone in my class had their siblings in the same school, except for me.
