“Literacy is the ability to read, write, speak and listen in a way that allows one to communicate effectively. The power of literacy lies not just in the ability to read and write, but rather in a person’s capacity to apply these skills to effectively connect, interpret and understand the workings of the world in which they live” (Gambrell & Morrow, 2015).
Literacy occurs as one becomes proficient in reading, writing, speaking and listening skills and strategies. The goal of a comprehensive literacy program is for every student to reach their fullest literacy potential. For my population of students that looks different for every student. My students struggle with literacy. I have non-readers, beginning readers and more advanced readers in my classroom but none near grade level.
