My Literacy Vision Statement

Improved Essays
My literacy vision statement has developed from many years of teaching experience. I believe all students can learn and grow and become literate, even students with special needs. I teach in a classroom designated for slow learners and struggling readers, many of which have cognitive impairments. My students may not learn in the same way as others or as much or as fast as other students, but they can learn and should be given that opportunity.
“Literacy is the ability to read, write, speak and listen in a way that allows one to communicate effectively. The power of literacy lies not just in the ability to read and write, but rather in a person’s capacity to apply these skills to effectively connect, interpret and understand the workings of the world in which they live” (Gambrell & Morrow, 2015).
Literacy occurs as one becomes proficient in reading, writing, speaking and listening skills and strategies. The goal of a comprehensive literacy program is for every student to reach their fullest literacy potential. For my population of students that looks different for every student. My students struggle with literacy. I have non-readers, beginning readers and more advanced readers in my classroom but none near grade level. To me reading and writing is not just reading and writing words. It is more than that. It is understanding what is read and communicating that understanding effectively through writing and speaking. When students understand what is read and how to communicate through writing and speaking, they gain knowledge and feel
