My Literacy Reflection

For me, written literacy has always been my area of weakness. A plan to improve these skills started before I commenced my first unit. A month prior to university studies I enlisted the help of ‘Grammar-Monster.com’. Most nights were spent tediously reading through the website page by page; this helped me refresh the limited information I had retained from school, as well as teach me the correct technical terminology for most grammatical aspects of writing. Once I had started my studies and had gained access to the Curtin website, I was able to use “The Learning Centre – Online programs” (Curtin University of Technology, 2015). In the transition from one study period to the next, not only do I read through these programs but I also consult books that I have purchased. Books range from ‘Year 3 Grammar and Punctuation – Back to Basics’ (Hazell, 2012) to ‘Context – Text – Grammar, Teaching the genres and grammar of school …show more content…
PaperRater (http://www.paperrater.com/) suggests I use a thesaurus to reduce the over use of simple words and that I should consult a website such as Vocabulary builder to improve my vocabulary – I will get ten random words from vocabulary builder each day of study; Polish my writing (http://www.polishmywriting.com/) says I should be careful with nominalisation; Writer’s Diet (Sword, n.d.) is saying that my writing is at ‘heart attack’ level with the excessive use of verbs and nouns. Knowing where I am going wrong is the first step in fixing my problems.

Writing literacy, in my opinion is one of the most important things school students need to learn. Even though I understand the above mentioned websites are just a guide, consulting them with my writing will help highlight areas that need attention. In saying that, the most valuable tool I plan on using is the feed back I get from my tutors. To me, there is no substitute for the real

“People don 't realize how a man 's whole life can be changed by one book” (Malcolm X). Books are beneficial in an individual’s vocabulary, memorization, and perspectives in life. In “On Being 17, Bright, and Unable to Read” by David Raymond, Hunger of Memory by Richard Rodriguez, and “My Alma Mater” from The Autobiography of Malcolm X by Malcolm X, all the authors struggled with something particular in literacy, but they all had different motives for improving their reading and writing. As seen in the three articles, each author had their own purpose in why literacy can be a good advantage and figured out different strategies to help ameliorate themselves. If you have obstacles which prevent you from reading or writing effectively, finding…

I started my journey through writing this year a bundle of nerves and a stomach full of coffee. This is my first year taking an advanced English course, but I was determined to do well. There has been no sleeping in class or slacking off this year, I’m lucky enough to take a college course a year early and at a better price, and I’m not going to waste it. I’ve learned a lot this semester, including but not limited to: identifying how exactly the author’s purpose and audience determines effective writing, developing pieces of writing though a process of planning, revising, and drafting, compose an organized essay with clear points and main ideas, used appropriate tone and formality, critiqued writing, and finally how to grasp the MLA format. My writing has improved through the concepts I have learned this semester.…

My Path to Literacy For a very long time writing and reading was a huge struggle for me. I was one of those students who was very intelligent, but disliked reading tremendously and was often told, “You write the way you talk”. The older I grew the more I realized that my struggles with writing was due to my lack of reading. I was aware of my issues but because it became a part of my writing habits it was hard to adapt to anything different. I wanted to be like everyone else and be a good authentic and productive writer but it seemed almost impossible.…

During the literacy module, I was able to learn the importance of building communication in literacy, and reflect on how I am already providing support to my student. I was also able to learn more ideas about the theoretical foundations and the practical strategies to help to prepare and build upon the skills my student already have. I also learned that with the strategies provided in each module, each focused on the adaptation and accommodation that makes the strategies individualized for student instruction. I also liked how each module started with the lowest level of literacy skills, and gave you strategies to build upon those skills by promoting meaningful access to literacy. Overall, the modules allowed me to practice with the application…

English is my native language and I am thankful for a great education where I learnt about the structure of the English language in terms of grammar and spelling in great detail. A very real struggle I have in writing is being able to organise my thoughts and structure my writing in a way that makes sense. I also struggle to write topic sentences for each paragraph, though the more academic writing I do, the more I am conscious of putting effort in. I have watched a number of YouTube videos which instruct on the purpose of introductions, how to write a thesis statement, the order of paragraphs and the purpose of topic sentences. Education is foundation by which achieving a goal is fundamental. As an Enrichment and Literacy Teacher, I witness the neglect of education and the repercussions of its prowess in the lives of young people in under-resourced areas here in New York. Presently, my group of people range from the grades Pre-K to third graders, and modeling the importance of literacy is essential to personal and overall success. My goal each day is to inspire, and teach the importance of literacy by beginning with the foundation and climbing the ladder of development with each child making for dynamic, creative and challenging approaches to cognitive expansion.
