Learning To Read You Will Be Forever Free Analysis

Good Essays
Frederick Douglass once said “Once you learn to read, you will be forever free”, and in my specific case, I find that statement to be extremely true. Since I was a young child, I loved to read and sometimes I even tried to write little songs or stories, even if they weren’t good. The thing is though, that since then, a lot has changed. Books have changed, the people who write have changed, the way people in general look at literacy has changed and most of all, I have changed. Therefore I find it necessary to tell you all about my life as a reader/writer through a personal narrative all about my processes, habits, events, and audiences, that influence me to be the person I am today. The first stop of my literacy history narrative is that of …show more content…
As said earlier, when I was younger I use to enjoy writing small pieces but as of today I do not do much of that. I guess that if people call thinking about things that could make stories but never make it to paper writings, then yes I am a bit of a writer, but otherwise I rarely write in my spare time. Reading however, is a totally different story. I love to read and because of that, if I have the time, I can read a book in as short amount of time as one day, often doing so in my favorite places like my swinging chair outside in the tree, the grass, and my bed with my two cats. Since I was given this assignment, I had told myself that I would plan it first, and then finish it right away, as soon as summer started. Even so, here I am, writing this entire paper on July 27, because I am a procrastinator, a major one at that. I have put things off for as long as I can remember, even if it was just the litter box, which I would try to weasel my way out of doing right away, so that has become my life routine. Now that I have started it, I did so at our dining room table, which is where I do a good sized portion of all my school work even though I have a desk in my room, because I like having more space to work. I have worked at a table instead of desks for a long time, but when all I have to do for homework is to read or do a little math, then some days I just lay on the …show more content…
When thinking about the event that shaped me the most, I would actually say that it is more like many events that shape me as a whole. Those events are that of my regularly going to the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. At the meetings, anyone can comment on things that they like about what we are studying, so it is good to have read and know the material being covered. Due to that, I have learned how to read much better than I believe I would have without. The people that were involved in this would be almost everyone I know, from my parents to just plain friends in the congregation. The reason that I began attending these meetings is because my parents are also Jehovah’s Witnesses, and so being that I came since I was a newborn, as a result I personally enjoy going to the meetings. I am almost positive that without going to the meetings, reading the material, and commenting often that I was helped to excel in literacy with reading and even a little bit better at

Learning to read is such an important feat to accomplish and if taught properly can be very rewarding throughout the remaining of your life. I do not remember a lot of things about my life growing up. I do, however, remember who taught me to read and the first book I learned to read. I also remember the feelings and frustrations that went along with these memories. While most of my school teachers were supportive of my learning, there were a few teachers that made me feel minuscule in my learning process.…

The feelings I have about reading and writing come from what I have experienced doing these things in the past. I have a positive attitude about them because I 've learned so much from writing and reading that it is an enjoyable experience for me. I am not the kind of person that can whip out a paper the night before or create a masterpiece from nothing, but I can write an essay or story without it being too much work. Due to all the reading I have done writing to me is almost as natural as talking. Also, I am quite good at knowing how to divide writing to make it less work. Some writers I have come to know write until they can't write anymore and that's when the stop, wearing themselves out in the process. When I write I pace myself knowing went to stop and when to pick it back up again.…

As one of the music students every fortnight I get the privilege of being in the worship band, I feel that with this new found knowledge of worship that I am able to enter in a lot better then I used to be able to. As a band it is awesome to look out into the room and see our classmates worshiping with us and seeing God really working in that room. It is really one of the greatest feelings and I thank God for it. Worship as a church I feel definitely has its benefits, the bible say’s that where two or more people are gathered, the Holy Spirit will be. So in church I am able to feel the Lord moving not just within myself but also within everyone, it makes it feel so much more like a massive family I and I find that really great.…

Literacy History Essay I became the literate person i am today by mostly writing, I write all the time and I do a little reading. What made me love writing was the fact I found an escape, not on an emotional level but writting is something to help ease in my opinion. I influenced writing myself, even though it’s something done in school a lot, I continued it outside of school as a choice of my own, once I started I never stopped. I have a different viewpoint on reading as I do writting, reading is not that bad but it can get boring. What made me feel different about reading from writting is probably the fact reading just takes time, like when you write, you write any and everytthing however you want.…

I remember when my father bought me the Junie B. Jones book series by Barbara Park. I read those books over and over again; I had fallen in love with the whole collection, but I still enjoyed to write more than reading. I was one of the young girls that felt the need to write down everything that happened to me and keep it in a journal. Looking back, I am glad I did. Not only did it help create memories of my childhood, but it also tremendously improved my writing skills.…

Green and she made class fun, interesting and easy to understand. Until later in the year when we had to read Huckleberry Finn which was a classical novel but I could not keep my eyes open during it. It was very boring for me and I didn’t really understand it. Long novels have never really captured my interest. Sophomore year we read probably the most stories of any previous year, but they were shorter and more interesting to me.…

Every day, I wish I was still there to get many more “lectures of wisdom,” as we called them. Throughout my high school career, he was one of the few teachers that took the extra time to find ways to help students and connect with them on more than just a student-teacher level. Unlike my other teachers, Mr. DeBore has helped me strengthen my literacy skills and helped with many struggles I had through my experiences at Joliet West more than I’ve been able to do on my own. He helped me realize how through my music, my brain could function more efficiently and help me stay focused when I was working on writing and even reading. Ever since I was a little girl I struggled with focusing on reading and writing but now I have a joy for it than I have ever before.…

********************************************************* The first free writing I did in class, I actually enjoyed it a lot. I thought it would be difficult because I wasn 't really sure what I would write about. It turns out it was fairly easy, I had so much to write about, I ended up wishing I had more time. I found out it wasn 't as easy to free write publicly as to privately. My free write introduction on my blog was focusing more on what I wanted the reader to know about me as to my private one I just wrote what came to my head and I…
