My Literacy: A Short Story

Improved Essays
My earliest memory of literacy is sitting around my daycare provider during story time, while she read us books. After story time we would be allowed to get our own books from the library. Although I could not read at the time, I still enjoyed looking at the pictures and making up my own story to go with it. When it came time to learn how to read, I was sort of impatient. I can remember having problems with phonics because I did not want to take my time to sound out words; I wanted to just be able to recognize the word immediately. I have always been very fond of reading books. I would always ask my mom to buy me books at yard sales or flea markets. One of my favorite childhood memories is my mom buying me the entire Junie B. jones series at …show more content…
It’s not that I did not like writing, I just never knew exactly what to say or if I place the comma in the correct space. But for while during middle school I did try to improve my writing. I tried journals/diaries and writing little stories about whatever I could think of. In middle school I can remember friends and I having a silly challenge about who could write the best story. Even though I was not confident in my writing capabilities, I was hopeful and very determined to write the best story. I think I had gotten about two pages done and I was so proud of myself. Then my 7th grade teacher Mrs. Pritchett happened to see the two pages I had written under my text book after she had told us to put up all our paper and notebooks off our desk. I had been too excited about my story that I could not put it up. When she passed my desk, she took my story and seconds after looking it over, she decided to read it to the entire class. The entire class laughed and made fun of me about it for weeks. For a long time that affected my writing even more because I now afraid of writing and thought whoever was reading my paper would laugh. I did not do anymore leisure writing. I made no effort to get better at writing. I always made C’s on writing assignments and became very content with that grade. I became habit to put off writing assignments till the very last minute. For the most part this was my attitude about writing up

In his article “What is literacy?”, James Paul Gee maintains that the definition of discourse: “a socially accepted association among the ways of using language, of thinking, and of acting that can be used to identify oneself as a member of a socially meaningful group or ‘social network’”. In the reading, discourse talk into production of goods in a society “dominant discourse” and assent to talk about those groups that have disagreement when using them as “dominant groups”. When people discuss something with other, they are not using their own ideas. At the same time, he goes on to explain that there are many points can make about discourse, such as the direction and significant in term. Important to realize, the author organizes discourse that…

Literacy Narrative I did a lot of writing while I was in the tenth grade. The English teacher I had at the time was the best when it came down to writing. I did not have too much interest in writing at the time but Mrs. Perez changed that, she gave me a new perception on writing and how it can change society. Mrs. Perez would always recommend really good books, one of which was a book called “His Dark Materials”. This story is about a young girl and her allies, fight for the discover of a dark substance called the “Dust”.…

The Literacy Narrative was sort of a trial and error project. I wrote the essay the best way I knew how and hoped for the best grade. I did though get to tackle a more creative aspect of my writing that needed much working on. Since this essay was based on our own experiences, it allowed me to be as creative as I would like rather than being confined to the requirements that something like a research paper would have. Despite this, I still realized that my Literacy Narrative was not my strongest paper.…

Starting with the first day we moved into our dorm we are greeted by new faces and take part in activities that would reserve a permanent place in our memories. Students arrived at Michigan State from different cities, different states, and even different countries, and we were placed in dorm rooms and worked to find our way to class. These students have different backgrounds and goals, and each had an idea for a career, but we all share the need to be able to communicate at a college level and writing is an excellent place to start. Michigan State requires completion of a college level writing course for all degrees and most students take WRA101, first year writing. The syllabus for this course states, “The goal of this course is to engage…

My journey with literacy has been a part of my life and began before I even entered school. During my early days you would say I was a “repeater”. I repeated things that I would hear from my parents and people that were around me all the time. Some of them were good to say and some not so good to say. My parents always sat down and read to me.…

Initial Reflection In my draft I was most successful in explaining each of my literacy events and connecting them to my theme. I focused on really explaining each event to make sure I was including all of the details but also so that the reader was able to understand how my literacy was formed. In the first paragraph where I discussed how I learned to read, I was going in depth with the details on how it shaped me and how it was really significant to my reading. I think I also did really well with connecting it to the Fishman quote that I used.…
