Achieving Lifetime Goals

When looking at the things that you are currently doing, you should ask yourself, if they help to you to picture where you want to be in 20 years. Extra-curricular, as well as academic activities are essential in the preparation of achieving lifetime goals. Considering my lifetime goal of becoming a medical doctor, that makes activities that I preoccupy myself with, even more important. Throughout my own life, I have been involved in many organizations that have been imperative in the development of the skills that I will need in order to take on the future. It was never the allure of cool lab equipment or money that made myself aspire to become a physician, but a calling to help others. Before I even had a grasp on the concept of money, it seemed to be the thing for me. A job where I would be able to help others and actually be a contributing member of society. The Boy Scouts of America have immensely prepared myself for becoming a physician. Though I have served many leadership roles inside of scouting, it is not the ability to lead in life that will help me to achieve my goals. It is the moral and ethical principles in which Scouting has instilled in me. Before every weekly meeting we repeat the Scout Law and the Scout Oath. The Scout Law is, “A Scout is Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent”. The Scout Oath is, “On my honor, I will do my best. To do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law. To help other people at all times; To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight”. The principles that scouting promotes are not only good principles to use to achieve your goals, but to have success in life in general. The characteristics that scouters embody, are the characteristics that are required in order to be a functioning member of society as a whole. Paul Lutheran’s Youth Group since I was in the 7th grade, has singlehandedly been the biggest influence on my lifetime goals. Watching my pastors over the years has been interesting. They all have worked very long hours, seven days a week. They have to deal with the stress of running a large congregation, making sure that the bills get paid consistently in order to keep the lights on. On top of that, they have to take care of their own family. The most peculiar thing to myself as a teenager though, had been the fact that they do all of this work, yet make no real money. When they will eventually pass away, they will have nothing to their names. This is noble. Their main priority in life, is to give back to God, what he has given to them in the form of life. They want to help save the lives of others, by sharing with them the word of Jesus Christ. The same principle should go along with doctors as well. When you are treating patients, you should not be thinking about the money that you are earning. Instead, you should focus your thoughts on the noble thoughts that drew you to that profession. People who love to help people should be doctors, not people who love money. Along with being a medical doctor, someday I too aspire to be a clergyman.
