As children we are helpless, we seek out those that can provide us with comfort. My mom had Breast cancer and I would go back and forth to the hospital for her treatment. I would helplessly watch her struggling to defeat this disease. I witnessed the stages of life to death and it exposed me to the world of medicine. When my mom passed away, I felt more helpless because I needed more answers then I was able to get. This feeling of helplessness was my motivating force to enter the world of medicine to make a difference.

Each patient was a learning experience for me. I gained a lot the experience of caring for many critically ill patients and how medicine played an important role in the betterment of their lives. One of the encounters that left a lasting impression in my life was when I was following my attending during my clerkship; I came across a patient, who was diagnosed with new onset diabetes mellitus, my attending inform her the findings and treatment plan. I sensed a feeling of uncertainty in her eyes due to breaking diagnosis. I inquired her if she had any questions, though she remained silent. On further encouraging her to open using my limited fluency of Chinese language at that time, she opened up. I gave my best to explain her and answer all her inquiries until she was comfortable and reassured. I urged her to follow up and be compliant. Next, I saw her again on follow-up, her inexpressible smile of gratitude and be able to cope up left an enormous impact on
