My Mother: How One Word That Changed My Life

Improved Essays
I was born in Lafayette, Indiana to the parents of Cheryl Griffin and Jon Griffin. My mother, Cheryl, was born in Gary, Indiana but soon moved to Terre Haute. She was a very loving and compassionate mother. If I had to describe her in one word, it would be outstanding. I say that because not only did she take care of her own children but she also took care of my father’s other children as well. My father, Jon, was born in a town in Texas. He was always really strict and angry. My one word to describe him would be explosive. My father would just pop like a bubble anytime my sisters or I did the slightest thing wrong. My mother and father divorced after my little sister Sandy was born. My mother decided this was best because of his anger and …show more content…
I graduated from Terre Haute North Vigo High School. I had quite a few friends in high school. I wondered from “click to click”, meaning I talked to and hung out with all kinds of social groups such as the “rockers”, “hippies”, and the “preps”. While in high school I got a job at Kroger. My job at Kroger brought new friends and lessons. I enjoyed working there. I learned how to work in both the deli and produce department while working on the cash register. In my second year of working at Kroger my step father died from lung cancer and I was devastated. Filled with grief, I quit my job and started a new one. That one didn’t last long either. I went from job to job until August 2nd of 2010. That was the day my world went completely upside down. My mother, diagnosed with lung cancer two weeks earlier, passed away. I felt like my life was over and there wasn’t a reason for me to be around anymore. Not too long after my mother’s passing I entered into an abusive relationship with a man I met online named Justin. I was with Justin for a little longer than two years. The relationship hadn’t started out abusive; in fact, he only became abusive when I finally agreed to move in with him. It seemed like he changed into a completely different man. Justin did things that even I thought was a weird kind of abuse. For example, to coerce me into doing things I didn’t want to do, he would sit on my chest so I could not move and spit on or around my face and …show more content…
I am also enrolled in school at Ivy Tech in Terre Haute with the hopes of one day working with children who can’t help themselves. Alex still works at Advics and I am currently a stay at home mommy. I hang out with my best friend, Ashley Myrtle on a regular basis. In fact, we both go to the gym to try to be healthier individuals. I have an amazing family which is the most important thing in my life. I value family, friends, and good times. There is nothing more important to me. I look forward to what the future holds and can’t wait to see my son

Every individual learns differently, processing information uniquely and possessing different strengths and interests. Though this is the case, the modern education systems attempt to regulate and conform youth from such a young age, resulting in the suppression of the creative minds because there are no regulations for “thinking outside the box”. Standardized tests are shoved down students’ throats, and a simple number as a result from their answers on a multiple choice screen deems how intelligent they are. The school systems need to take action to nourish and develop their pupils’ individual interests and strengths instead of deem them inadequate or “below average” because they can not meet or exceed all the standards forced upon them. For…

Mom was small, a slight 110 pounds but through my eyes, she was large, even after my height surpassed hers. To this day, she would argue that she weighed only 100. Her strong presence claimed her space, and anyone else's that she cared to. Being right was of utmost importance to her, and she made sure always to have the last word. Overbearing, and overprotective of me, her only child, she usually controlled every situation, regardless of how trivial.…

Will Smith, an American actor, once stated, “If you're absent during my struggle, don't expect to be present during my success.” This quote is important because it has great meaning. It simply conveys that hard times will reveal your true friends. In other words, those who are not there for you when you need them most are not your true friends. These are the people you hang out with due to a common interest, or because you see them five days a week.…

Alzheimer’s, a medical diagnosis for what some ignorantly see as simply getting old, is a terrifying reality for many families. I’m used to hearing people complain of “old timer’s” when they forget something, or joking about an elderly teacher who’s worked here forever having it, but little do people know, alzheimer’s is a reality I deal with every day when I step foot in my house. I’ve never had what most would consider a normal family. I began my life living with my mom and my grandparents, as my mom was a single parent. That, to my dismay, changed when I was two years old and my mother got married.…
