Who would you be without your family? What would be different in your life if they did not behave and interact the way that they do? Do you ever realize how your great-grandparents shaped the way you were raised? My family is a bit crazy We are known for being strong and independent women who enjoy being challenged. This trait comes from generations of women with the same demeanor. For me it comes from my grandma, who we all adoringly call “Nanny”; she caught her independent streak from her mother. My mother, sister, Nanny, and I all share the one household.
I had the privilege of interviewing Nanny during a long car ride and gained great insight into her own childhood and my great-grandparents life. I also interviewed my sister, Haven, through

We all knew that we had chores to do- weeds to pull in the garden. And he told my mother that he wasn’t pulling the weeds. My mother was washing the clothes. She grabbed the clothes prop and said ‘you pull those weeds or else’ and he said ‘I will not’. For every weed that he pulled she hit him on the rear-end with the wooden stick. He pulled weeds, alright. He did! I mean you didn’t discipline your parents or talk back to them. You respected them and if they didn’t, they would teach you how to respect. But they were always there for us.
Even the most recent generations of my family have experienced punishment through pain. Nanny has inherited the backhanding gene from her mother, and used it in desperate times or when her young granddaughter uses a very inappropriate word. My sister tells a humorous story about the day she discovered the consequences of using a new word she learned on the playground.
When I was in second grade, I was singing "We Will Rock You" by Queen. I decided to remix it. I changed the word from rock to a lovely four letter word beginning with “f” ". I never knew my Nanny 's arthritic hands could fly back that fast and smack me across the mouth. The woman has an awesome backhand. I had no idea what that word meant, but after seeing the look of rage on her face, I knew not to say that it ever

The person I interviewed was my mother, Nancy Morton. Right now she is 54 and was born in Allendale, New Jersey in 1962. The reason I chose to interview her was she was willing to share her experiences with me and was more convenient at the time when I was looking for someone to interview. After Nancy graduated from her undergraduate school with a degree in mechanical engineering, she applied for several job interviews, and the interview with General Electric, or GE, went particularly well and got the job. She arrived in Cincinnati when she was 21 in June of 1984 after getting hired by GE.…

My time in China was very vague but I remember a specific event, which made me realize that in China, respect and manners were very important, more so than America to what I have noticed. I can still recall vividly the time how my uncle disciplined me. It was my fault, really.…

In the words of Shannon L. Alder, “Your perspective of life comes from the cage you were held captive in.” In other words, Alder is saying that the way you view the world is based on the way you grew up. Many aspects that impact the way you see the world include: your family, religion, parents, gender, role in the family, etc. A cultural lens is the way you see life and the world around you. When I first learned of this assignment my first thought was to interview my mom. She is the one person in my life I am closest to. Since we are only twenty three years apart, I thought it would be best to focus on her life up to the point where she decided to have kids. Though I knew most of what she told me it was still nice to just sit and talk about her life experiences. My mother was born to older parents and was the youngest of three children.…

His family was greatly affected by the depression and had to move around a lot because his father was a minister and was moved to lots of different churches when he was a kid. I believe my grandpa, Charles Edwin Hanna Jr., is an extraordinary person because he got to see the world, live in a time where they lived with very little, and has lived through all the invention we nowadays take for granted. My grandpa was born in Pennsylvania in 1939 and had an older brother named John and a younger sister named Ina.…
