Narrative Essay About My Reading Experience

Where did it all begin? I often ask myself how I arrived at this place in my life when it comes to reading and writing. Let’s start at the beginning of my 31 years. When I was around the age of 3 I was forced to go to church as most children that age are. My attention span was non existent to say the least. My mother, knowing that it would be far fetched to get me to sit and behave for 3 hours of my small life decided to try to keep my mind occupied by giving me the hymn book to read. She knew I loved music and singing so naturally giving me the hymn book was a great way to not only keep me entertained but to further my love of god, music and reading. I learned the words through the music. I didn’t necessarily know the words I was saying at this point but I knew the music and tried to sing along.

By age 10, I had surpassed all the reading groups at school and was on my way to getting into higher learning groups. 6th grade proved to be the high point of my reading excitement. I spent my recess pretty much everyday in the library helping the librarian put books away. I was in there so often that she even let me use the computer to check out books to students. At this point in time I thought just maybe this is where my life would take me. Would I be a librarian when i grew up?

Since the posting my poems to an internet site for all to see, I have not really embraced reading and writing like I did when I was a child. Every now and again I would have to write an essay for a job or read “A” book that I chose to read but that’s it. I didn’t have the time to read anymore. My family came first. I decided to quit school at age 21 and get married and have a family instead. My 2 beautiful children and husband are the most important thing in my life! That will never change, but what happened to my dream of becoming a Labor and Delivery Nurse? Did I still want to do that? The answer was

I don’t have much memory as a kid with reading and writing at home, because my parents never really forced me to read or write and I don’t ever remember being read to either. I think my reading has improved because I use better vocabulary and I can understand what I am reading. The reading strategies have helped me to become a better reader. I still rely on DJE, T2T like I did when I took basic reading as well. They are very helpful strategies that help me to read better and think about what I am reading. For this and other classes my goals are to understand what I am reading and being able to sum up what I read with very little difficulty.…

As a little kid all I ever wanted to do was go outside and play with my friends and on top of that the house we were living in was right next to a park. But instead of going outside and playing with friends I was trapped inside having to read a book I didn’t even want to read. Also in those years I started to not like writing because I just hate to write especially when you have to read an article and write about it or answer questions because in my mind I don’t see why we have to do it. Why does what I think about that matter and why do I have to write a lot, I was a little kid with little hands and writing a lot starts to hurt your hand and it’s not…

Receiving a grade of a 92 out of 100 on a paper is not necessarily an unacceptable outcome for many people, yet this grade was one of my lowest grades out of all my papers in English 1101. The 92 my literacy narrative earned inspired me to revise this paper for the final. My literacy narrative was my first college paper and after the two papers I have written in this class I thought I was more equipped to fix my errors within this paper. I chose to write a short story as a rendition of my literacy narrative. I thought it would be interesting to write a story through my mom’s perspective, reactions, and impact on my growth as a reader and writer.…

Ironically, though I wasn’t immediately taken with reading, I became an avid reader after those first few difficult years. I was a regular at my elementary school’s small library, and I competed in everything book-related that I could. When I Learned to Read and Write. I first started reading and writing in preschool, my teacher was very helpful and did everything she could do to help me achieve goals, and become who I am today. When I was younger I would pretend that I could read and I would read to all of my toys. In preschool, my teacher saw me trying to read so she came over to me and started to help me sound out the words and form the sentences so that I could read. The first book I read was Dr.Seuss’ “Green, Eggs and Ham.”…

Reading was something I was practically raised on as a child. My dad made sure that my younger sister and I were read to every single night before he tucked us in, passing down a tradition that he believed had aided in shaping his own childhood. I distinctly remember my simple mind roaming along in the lands of Narnia and Middle Earth as such books instilled in me a restless sense of adventure and a longing to learn. This longing drove me to read more and more on my own, all the while my father continued to read to me at a higher and more complex level, that at the time seemed unattainable. Yet books to me were journies completely separate from my own world and I could never seem to envision them as anything more than a source of entertainment.…
