Reflective Essay: How Suicide Changed My Life

Improved Essays
Throughout my life I had noticed people struggling to be the best, or sometimes just simply to survive. The first time I felt that I truly needed to do something was the beginning of eighth grade. A close friend of mine who I had not seen all summer came to school looking sullen. That day, our teacher had us gather around and told us that his friend had committed suicide recently. Each one was manned by a few smiling volunteers passing out candy, pamphlets, and magnets with their logos on …show more content…

Gordon Marino author of "A Life Beyond Do What You Love", published in 2014 in the New York Times, believes that people should not only do what they love but perform something that can benefit society or their families. Mariano is a professor of philosophy, a student advisor and a community volunteer. He began to realize that when advising students, he would always tell them to do what they love even though in reality they did not know what they loved to do.…

I have felt so confused and overwhelmed not knowing what I am going to do with the rest of my life. If someone has not already thought of this, they most likely will because the majority of people have to have serious questions based upon what they want to make a career out of. However, some people have always known what they feel passionate about and can make a career out of. Ever since I was young, I have always loved houses from interior to exterior and even structurally with floor plans. In third grade, I decided I wanted to be an interior designer and it was not until last year, my junior year in high school, that I figured out it would not be the best job field for me.…

I eventually chose what I thought would be a good stable career simply because it would be a financially good choice but it never seemed like something I could stick with or love. I discounted anything from the medical field because everyone was going there and I didn't want to be a lost number of people rushing to the same career, I wanted to be a little different.…
