Personal Narrative: My New Horse

Improved Essays
There I was staring out of the window; nervous and excited my heart was pounding with over 100 beats per minute, I would finally be meeting my new horse that my father had purchased for me. She looked sort of like vanilla ice cream with Oreo cookies, thats what her color reminded me of the first time I placed my eyes on her. I had no choice in choosing her name, as my father had already chosen for me, her name was Canela. I would have remembered this as the happiest day in my life; six years old and getting my new horse, well happiest day for now. My ranch was located in a small village in Mexico called Potrero, Nuevo Leon. The mountains there were breathtaking and almost like if they were too nice to be real. My horse was there and lived …show more content…
Where there he had five horses, terrified to even get near them he insisted that I at least try to get on the calmest one that he had. Her name was Margarita because she was always mad. Margarita was a retired race horse and new mom, she was brown with a white stripe along her face. Months and months of him begging for me to get on and one summer day I did. I spent the rest of the summer riding and riding falling in love with each and every horse that had now became mine technically. With all of this that had happened, I opened my eyes and finally realized that it was not Canela’s fault that she freaked out, but that it was her sensing my nerves and how my brother kept scaring her. Although this left me with scars on my face I am glad it happened. It was a lesson that I learned and it took a long time to learn from it but I realized that horses should not only be treated with care when making noises and the way someone talks but also should be appreciated for what and how they are. I am proud to say that today I can ride my horses confidently and happily. Lastly, I enjoy sharing this story with others, because many people think of horses as animals that can hurt you. That is not true at all. If you treat an animal with love especially a horse the love will be returned times ten. Falling off my horse is not something that was bad, but something good; something that changed

Every little girl grows up loving horses, but most outgrow that desire. I never did. When I was young, I was scared of them because the first horse I fed a carrot to looked as though he could eat me. I was 4 years old and also the size of his head. For the longest time, I wished to ride and train horses even though I did not know a single thing about doing that; today, I teach other people more about how horses work within their herd and how humans can better work with their horse.…

By making the change to the isolated barn I also changed the type of horses I rode also. I went from riding grand prix hunter derby horses and medal winning ponies to rescue “project” horses. I was hit by many epiphanies while adapting to the new barn life. I was less fond of the “made” picture perfect show horses and had a larger admiration for the horses that were rougher around the edges. There was something about their uneven manes, sunbleached tails, and hoarse neighs that beckoned me to take an interest in…

I’ve realized in my lifetime that saddling a horse that you are going to ride is not as natural of an act to other people as it is to me. Since the moment I had both the strength and height to lift my own tiny saddle up to the back of my animal, I was saddling by myself. These days in the time that I set aside to ride, I don’t even think about the act of saddling, I could almost finish the act blindfolded. In my realization that not all people know how to saddle a horse and if they have an idea it may not be the proper way, I decided to share my knowledge in this area with others.…
