Ponderosa’s change bark color as they get older. After about one-hundred years, merely just in teenage years for these trees, they start shedding their old black bark and show a warm yellow bark. They are called vanilla pines, because when they shed their bark, they have a sweet smell like vanilla. In the west they have many forest fires, and storms. However, for these vanilla pines, they don’t go down without a fight. When hit by lightning, "it flash-boils the sap, and it just blows the bark off. It doesn't burn the tree," -Hirst. They are also known for surviving forest fires. Everyday we are making choices, some challenging. Maybe we are in a storm and being hit with lightning. Maybe we are in the middle of a forest fire, when everything in life seems out of control. In the past five years, I have wanted to go into the nursing field. My interests started with my Grandma, and although I may not be able to halt the inevitable, I just might be able to help people stand through their forest
