History making is in the air and the game is getting closer to the end, you only have one chance to make one shot, to cash your check in the bank and the buzzer sounds. Your team wins because of you! You did it! But how? Basketball is amazing. Everyone says, “ball is life” but I personally believe I bring life to basketball. My natural athleticism and electrifying excitement I bring to the court is primarily why I believe what I do. I get fans riled up, I get the crowd jumping out their seats, I get strangers from miles away to come see my games, and I got the staff and faculty members talking about me. Its an amazing feeling. Its exciting being on a team where everyone knows what you’re capable of and they leave the ball in your hands to win the game. So how did I do it... I started off playing basketball when I four years old, but only started seeing it as a potential career and started the pursuit when I was fourteen, ten years later. At the age of four, I was too young and unable to play with my father, but I always watched. Seeing my father fly up the court dunking on anyone and everyone in his way gave me motivation. For many years, I taught myself how to play basketball. But because I could not teach myself anything I did not know, I learned by practicing what worked. Trying out new ways to shoot and new ways to dribble then using them in …show more content…
Literally, all the blood, sweat, and tears went into becoming the athlete I am. I nearly quit so many times, but I stayed persistent. Practicing by myself increased my stamina, durability, and has boosted my self-esteem. Starting off I didn’t take the sport seriously; I always played it as a hobby and cared less about its rules. Practicing summer after summer I realized there is more to the game than just throwing the ball into the hoop. I then discovered books and online tutorial videos to help increase my intellect and skill of the game. In my sophomore year, I tried out for the first basketball team of my basketball career and unfortunately I was cut from the team on the last day of tryouts. I was disappointed in myself because I spent two hundred and fifty dollars on my basketball shoes and didn’t even get a chance to showcase them in an expedition game.…

You might not think basketball could help me academically; but it has. Leading up to this basketball game, academically, I was quite different than who I am today. Prior to this game, I did little talking to people that intimidated me, such as teachers, mostly I was just shy. However, after speaking with so many people that I did not know following the game, it has all changed. From that point on, I was brave and unafraid to communicate with teachers.…

That was embarrassing I love the game of basketball, even when I score in the other team’s basket. In my defense, I was only six years old and it was my first time being on a basketball team. Me and my older brother Houston were on the same team, and at the time we were losing by seven or eight points and there was hardly any time left in the game, maybe a second or two. I was always the smallest kid on the court…

Heartbreak and hours of crying–that was the aftermath of finding out I didn’t make the travel basketball team in the fifth grade. I started playing recreational basketball for Montville in the third grade; since then, I had dominated the competition as I hit my growth spurt earlier than most of my friends. Not only was I taller than most of the kids I played with, but I was also faster and stronger. Coming into the tryout, I was confident in my abilities and believed that I would make the team. Upon finding out the results of the tryouts, I was devastated and felt cheated because I thought I was better than some of the kids that made the team.…

One of my greatest assets is dedication. While I was not the best basketball player on my high school team, I worked constantly to perfect my jump shot. Throughout my high school basketball career, I have met with my coach three days per week for one-on-one workouts to perfect my ball handling and shooting form. I wanted to be a much better basketball player, and was willing to put the work in to improve my game every day. I made the Varsity basketball team as a freshman, but didn't see the court at all.…

The girl’s varsity basketball program at Rockwall High School holds one state championship title, an unbroken district championship record of nearly twelve years and has competed in a total of three state championship games since 2005; the third state championship being in 2011¬, my freshman year. Though I had been playing basketball all my life, I knew I could improve myself after having been on the “B team” in middle school. I was still just discovering how to be fully in control of my long, lanky limbs, but nonetheless, I wanted more than to go out on the court and perform just as skillfully and poised as the girls on our varsity team. I mean they were going to state. They were celebrities in my eyes and they had earned it, too.…

There have been many elements that I have learned through the Harlingen High School basketball program, which may be transferred to any situation in life, as the basketball program has allowed me to determine the type of person I am. This was due to the fact that I was placed in many challenging situations, which fatigued me both mentally and physically, to a point which I chose how willing I was to overcome those obstacles. Organized basketball has been a part of my life beginning at age six, and has not left my side since. I have loved the game itself, and the actual competitiveness that is apart of it. Competitiveness is the overall intention for the game of basketball and would not and could not be enjoyed without such an element as it.…
