How David Michael Grenon Changed My Life

There I was, moving as fast as I could. It was my first race. My first real test in life. I was nearing the finish line when I turned my head to see how far away my competitors were. Only one other was left and they were catching up. This was it, I gave it my all, and burst through the finish line. I had won. Nine months later I was born in Derby, Connecticut on June 21, 1997. My mother wanted to name me Skylar, but my father wanted to name me after himself, and so my name became David Michael Grenon Jr. I am currently 18 years old and living in Waterville, Maine. I live here because I am attending a liberal arts school, called Thomas College. Although I live in Waterville, my hearth is the small town of Dover-Foxcroft which is about an hour north of here. We often would go to the skate park in our town, which was just a slab of tar that people sometimes brought ramps or jumps to. I would sometimes talk to the people that went there, although most of them time they were teenagers. One day my mom, Dustin and I were at the skate park sitting in the car waiting for some guys that were there to leave because I felt too awkward to go out and skate while they were there. A heavier set teenage guy was skateboarding and I was watching him and looking at his clothing. He was wearing skinny jeans, which were and still are a big thing in fashion, but I remember questioning why he was wearing skinny jeans if he wasn’t, skinny? My mom said something that I will never forget and is probably the most impacting sentence I’ve heard in my whole life. I don’t quite remember the way she worded it but it was something to the effect of, “that doesn’t mean anything, he could be the nicest person in the world.” Ever since then I have always tried not to judge people by the way they look or the kind of clothing they
