Most people go through life trying to blend in. Just like a school of tuna, people stay in the center of a group for their safety because they are less likely to be targeted by their predators. This way of living is great if you want to scrape by in life; however it lacks uniqueness. People who just blend in life often miss out on the best parts of it, which is why I prefer to live my life like a mantis shrimp. The mantis shrimp stands out with its vibrant coloring, but has a very unique way of looking at the world considering it has thirteen more color viewing lenses that humans; I have a bright personality that has been influenced by many world views that I would love to share with other students at UK.

the mindset of wanting to fit in but simultaneously stand out leads to everyone being similar. But as Emerson stated in his work “Self-Reliance”, “we but half express ourselves, and are ashamed of the divine idea which each of us represents” (369). Showing how people being afraid to completely express themselves manifest the movement of fitting in. Another example from Thoreau of modern day Americans losing opportunities because they want to fit in is, “... that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life in which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours” (Walden 385). He’s depicting the idea that if everyone lives the life they imaged, rather than one to be accepted, success is a…

Hipster Cows (An Analysis of Conformity Through Colin Wilson's Quote) Emerson once said, "To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment. " Man will never be able to fully eradicate conformity, because it is human nature to a certain degree, but one can prevent the unnecessary conformity. The brave few who follow the path less traveled often finds it a rewarding experience. If one can escape the repertoire of life expectations, their roadmap of vitality will be as colorful as Neapolitan ice cream.…

Kenneth Gergen makes it really clear that he does not support the assumption that a person develops one coherent identity in the article, "In Defense of Masks." Although psychologists say it is normal, Gergen mentions the opposite, "they may experience severe emotional distress" (196). The use of multiple identities represented by masks is used, because people seek approval from others and Gergen supports this idea with how different relationships causes one to learn more about themselves. I agree with Gregen 's opinion because people change based on the people they are surrounded by when growing up and the people live more effectively with their use of masks.…

Both the source and Legrain believe that the world will benefit from the influence of modern culture, and would argue that identity is able to thrive in the process of globalization because the new and different aspects introduced to a culture allow for a wider understanding and more opportunity for individuals to discover new talents and religions, both of which make up a large part of a person's identity. In the sources opinion, an individual would be able to choose what they wish and the resulting freedom would strengthen a sense of identity. The source might also state that many job opportunities are afforded to nations that experience social globalization, as is expected with the introduction of new businesses and companies. In opposition to the source, one might draw attention to dangers of social globalization, such as the disregard for smaller cultures that have been usurped by larger cultures, who wished to assimilate other nations and spread a culture that represented the beliefs of their…

One of the most defining moments of one’s life is when one discovers who they truly are inside. Growing up, the influences of friends and family are clearly marked on one’s beliefs, ideals, and moral standards, whether they want to believe it or not. The desire to fit in is what pushes many people to do things they may not be comfortable with or believe in themselves; this is alternately called peer pressure. However, even through moments of weakness and the struggle to belong, one shapes and forms their own identity simply by knowing what they do and do not believe in.…
