My Life In My Family

I live my parents, grandmother and brother. My brother is a sophomore at Niles North High School. I have one uncle, one aunt, and one cousin who live near us. My grandfather passed away two years ago. My mom’s parents and sister live in the Caribbean and I see them every once in awhile. My grandfather (dad’s side) came to America nearly 50 years ago for better economic opportunities. He settled in New York and my grandmother, dad, and uncle soon followed from India. On my mom’s side, they went from India to Liberia finally to the Caribbean (with the exception of my mom). My family eventually moved to Chicago, then to Skokie for better economic opportunities and a safer place to raise a family. Family and respect are two big aspects of the Indian …show more content…
My parents work long hours and my grandmother is in her 70’s. Besides gym class, my brother doesn’t like to be active at all. And while homework does keep me from being active besides gym, I usually try to do some walking or shoot some hoops to get some exercise in. Eating varies from day to day. Some days it’s pretty healthy, with a huge emphasis on vegetables and fruits and low sodium and low fat foods. Other days, it’s vice versa. My family eats out 1-2 times a week. My mom and grandma are usually in charge of meals. My family and I need to find more time to exercise, have a more consistent effort eating healthier things, and curbing our fast food …show more content…
I love to read, write, obsess about basketball, spend time with my friends, use Tumblr, and geek/nerd out on various things. I don’t get as much time to write, that and my muse is very elusive, but I always read. Basketball has been a constant in my life for years and while I don’t play it competitively, I always watch games or highlights. I keep up to date with the NBA and WNBA, and keep an eye out for potential players in college ball. Social media wise, everyone I know loves Snapchat, or Instagram, or maybe still sticks to Facebook. I however, will profess my love for Tumblr from the top of the tallest building if needed. Tumblr gets a bad rep for a variety of reasons, but I love following blogs catered to the content I like. I love spending time with my friends, inside and outside of school. One of the many things we geek/nerd out over included Harry Potter, among other things. It’s a nice way to talk about shared interests and focus on something that isn’t school related. I don’t necessarily have favorite foods just favorite cuisines. My favorite cuisines are Chinese, Indian, and Mexican. I listen to mostly pop, R&B and jazz music. Favorite artists include Halsey, Sam Smith, Ellie Goulding, and The Weekend. I love watching action and comedy films, especially a combination of the two. Favorite actors/actresses include the Wayan brothers, Melissa McCarthy, and Bruce

While reading Mary Water’s Black identities: West Indian Immigrant Dreams and American Realities, I was intrigued by her findings on West Indian Immigrants idenidity in Ameirca. The main theme I noted throughout the book was development of the West Indians racial and ethnic Identity in America. Water’s gave a general introduction that she was raised in Brooklyn, NY. Water’s introduced her story by sharing her witness the neighborhood transform; the familiar faces she grew up with gradually began to disappear and a diverse array of ethnic people, in this case West Indian / Caribbean, started to replace her old neighbors. Walter’s personal experience, as well as being a professor and former chair of the sociology department at Harvard, inspired her to investigate into the influx of Black and West Indian population and record their American immigration experiences .…

Arnold (a.k.a Junior) is the witty and colorful protagonist of Sherman Alexie’s The Absolutely True Diary of a Part- Time Indian. The first thing Arnold refers to is that he is a hydrocephalic (1.1). However, instead of referring to his disorder as the name given to it by the doctors of the scientific world, he instead refers to it as “water on the brain” (1.1), immediately capturing the reader’s attentions. Junior’s actions, thoughts, and problems do relate to most of the readers of the book, Junior undergoes many problems that common youths face, which is enough to make him a hero to many. According to Merriam Webster’s dictionary, a hero is someone who is “a person who is greatly admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities.”…

During the Nineteenth Century, western expansion was erupting in America, and federal policy decided that certain tribes had to be confined to fixed land plots to continue their traditional lifestyles. American Indians were being forced off of their lands, and they were not adjusting well. Federal policy was trying to Americanize the “savage” indians so that they could be introduced into American society. American Indians were sent to live on small areas of land within a group’s territory that was reserved exclusively for their use, or reservations. Native Americans retaliated against the American government wanting to relocate them due to it’s former policy of treating the much of the west as Indian preserved territory.…

NAME PROFESSOR NAME COURSE NAME DATE The Native American Visit It is very seldom that a person thinks about the Native Americans, their culture or even where they are in today's contemporary world. However, one of the most interesting and by far life changing events was visiting the Cherokee Native American reservation located in Oklahoma. This reservation was unlike any other place ever experienced for a variety of different reasons including the level of depression and anguish that was seen across the people I interacted with. Upon entering the reservation, there was a constant feeling of despair and historical injustice that penetrated the eyes of every person I asked for directions.…

I come from a mixed background; my mother is Italian and my father is African-American, and the two cultures that I have experienced by being mixed have shaped me into the person I am today. My Italian grandparents, or as I call them "Nono and Nona," came to America from Italy for a better life. Their determination to make such a life-changing journey to another country has thus been instilled in me and has made me realize that if you take the path you want in life, it will all work out. My African-American grandmother, or as I call her "Nana," was born in West Virginia then moved to Columbus, Ohio, where my father was born. After many years in Ohio and when my father was young, their family moved to Los Angeles, California.…

While growing up in the United States or Canada you were probably taught not to use the word “Indian” when referring to the indigenous peoples of these countries. “Indians” are people from South Asia, and using the word “Indian” here in North America seems outdated and conjures to mind the historic uses of harmful stereotypes and by todays means seems very politically incorrect. Today we must be very careful in what we say, how we say it and whom we say it too. Words are loaded with many different meanings and implications, and even the idea of having an overarching term that purports to refer to indigenous peoples of the Americas as a whole is incredibly problematic (lamarkewicz, 2013). “Indian”, at its root, is based on a misconception,…

Being a registered Native American who grew up on the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians reservation I am able to provide an unique insight into a culture unfrequented by the outside world. This esoteric insight could be very advantageous to Johns Hopkins community as a whole because exceptionally few individuals are ever presented with the chance to learn about such secluded cultures. Growing up on the reservation I became accustomed to a different way of life that limited my exposure to westernized lifestyles. Moving off the reservation was a colossal culture shock but gave me a profound comprehension of the struggles of conforming to a society that contradicted every aspect from my own. Everything from the dialect to mannerism differed in…
