Being born and residing my entire life in the bordertown city of Laredo, Texas, most of my life has been spent surrounded by hispanic culture. Both of my parents come from hispanic roots, and were unable to fluently speak or understand English. Consequently, as a child, I was not taught nor was I able to practice how to become fluent in English anywhere other than at school. Not being able to speak english posed as an enormous problem for the majority of my social and academic life at school, but despite feeling dismayed, I refused to give up. My mother, born in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, initially came to the United States planning to finish her high school education and immediately go back to finish college in Mexico. Furthermore, my father, …show more content…
Around second grade, our classes began getting separated into two categories: the students who mainly spoke spanish, and the students fluent in english along with bilinguals. Of course, I felt comfortable around people who spoke spanish, but as a child I would notice most of my friends who were in the “normal” classes would get small prizes which allowed me to have something to look forward to achieving. Although that doesn’t seem like a big reward now, it motivated me enough to practice writing and talking english on my own time which eventually led for me to accomplish my goals of getting switched to the ‘regular’ classes and befriending my classmates. Unfortunately enough, I got a different teacher which wouldn’t give out prizes, but I didn’t let that bring me down and still tried my best to excel in

Bilingualism has recently become a major issue and a valuable one because in comparison with monolingualism it allows people to live between two worlds, two cultures, adopting the specific ways of thinking and feeling of the people they come into contact. To be bilingual involves more than speaking another language than your own, it is all about the inner significance of words apparently similar in two languages but deeply different, this is a major issue analysed by Anna Wierzbicka who strongly develops all the implications of this subject in the article Bilingual lives, bilingual experience. Firstly, as the name of the article suggests, to be bilingual would mean to split yourself between two different ways of life adopting the basic concepts…

My educational story started a long time ago in Bogota, Colombia. Being one of four children in a low socioeconomic class made it difficult for my parents to afford a college education for all of us. My older brothers were in the engineering school, which was expensive, stretching my parent's pockets and, reducing the possibility for them to pay for my college tuition. I found out about a grant that a prestigious university offered to high school students with the best high school grades, and the best scores in the ICFES test (similar to the ACT test in North America).…

I am bilingual. I state this based on Grosjean’s perspective that “the bilingual is not just someone who speaks two languages, but he possesses… communicative skills in two languages at different levels” (in Wei, 2007). In this paradigm of bilingualism (or multilingualism), being able to use English for communicative and academic purposes, being able to read academic texts in Italian and understanding general conversations in such language, being able to understand general ideas from conversations in French; makes me multilingual. It is clear I am not able to use any of those languages with the same level of proficiency as I use my first language, Spanish. Speakers very seldom use two different languages for the same purposes.…
