The Importance Of A Veterinarian In My Life

One of the scariest and yet most thrilling moments in my life was when I got in a holding run with an anesthetized lion to help hold for intubation. It’s moments like these that reaffirm my love for the veterinarian field and keep me coming back to learn more. It was when I was growing up that I started to understand just how crucial veterinarians are in my everyday life. My mom was diagnosed with severe rheumatoid arthritis before I was born. Over the years I have seen her suffer through this disease and have helped her through countless surgeries. During her recovery period there were many times where my brother and I were not able to be at home to help her due to school and other activities, but she was never alone. Dentistry is in many ways just like veterinary medicine; both medical fields exist to help others. A veterinarian’s role does not stop at keeping his or her patients alive, but continuing to maintain their overall health so that they too can have the greatest quality of life. There is no veterinarian how-to manual, nor is there an everyday routine to what a veterinarian may do from day to day. When I graduate from vet school I will be prepared to administer patient check-ups, take on emergency surgeries, euthanize a patient, and many other duties that come along with being a veterinarian. There are many people that think veterinarians joined the field because of the limited interaction with humans, but a veterinarian’s care does not stop with the patients, it continues over to their owners too. A veterinarian must be able to interact with others, not only to treat patients, but to also be able to inform and discuss the patient’s status. In addition, veterinarians act as another outlet for emotional support in times when the patient is going through an intensive surgery or when euthanasia is likely
