Growing up in a loving home is something most would typically wish for. Growing up in a loving home and feeling unworthy of that love may seem a living nightmare. From a young age I always felt as though there was something intuitively wrong, whether it was not meeting expectation or being unable to complete a task the way I perceived it should have been. There was always this impending need for more from myself, that for some reason I could never fill. That all changed when I found the one thing that always seemed to give back - drugs and alcohol. Overcoming my addiction’s however, has given me insight and value beyond anything I could have ever comprehended. The day that I decided to change my life for the better - January 19, 2010. This day will forever be engrained the the very fiber of my being. Not because I identify as an alcoholic, because it was this day I took back my voice. The day I finally realized I was worthy of the love of my family, the support of my peers and the unwavering love of my Higher Power. Having dealt with demons for nearly ten years, this was not an easy task. It took the constant support of my family and friends, never giving up on the person they knew I truly was; all of this is what it took for me to truly embrace the process of recovery. …show more content…
My recovery has allowed me to run a successful business and enjoy what I do on a daily basis. It has also allowed me to be a brother, a son and a husband to my beautiful wife. The value obtained through the kindness and generosity of others, has given me the value I sought through means of drugs and alcohol. I am not ashamed to call myself a recovering addict/alcohol today, and because of this fact, I know that I have a fighting chance to maintain my sobriety and pass it on to someone

As a married man, whose wife is also in recovery, I felt both grateful for my family in recovery, and deep sorrow for the movie portrayal of the destruction of a family, by alcohol. Sorrow, because I know many alcoholics who suffered the destruction of their families, in real life. My family, was on the verge of destruction, as I chose recovery, before my spouse, and suffered the same separation portrayed in the film. Today, I thank my Higher Power, that he intervened, and my wife conceded to attend an South Orange County rehabilitation program where she was exposed to, and chose recovery. A fact which resulted in both of us enrolling at Saddleback, and making recovery in AA…

Addiction is a disease that has spread into an epidemic. However, this book’s main focus is to ultimately help the struggling addict and their family overcome hardships and successfully find recovery. They will achieve this by using the “six principals of good recovery” that concentrate on both the process and the outcome perspective (Shumway & Kimball, 2012, p.3). The six principals include: hope, healthy coping skills, achievement and accomplishment, capacity for meaningful relationships, unique identity development, and reclamation of agency. The first of the six essentials on the road to recovery is hope, defined as “a reawakening after despair” and “to expect with greater confidence” (Shumway & Kimball, 2012, p.9)…

Controversy has seen latest interventions take an alternative stance by shifting away from total abstinence and instead incorporating a holistic and strengths-based outlook involving aspects of Restorative Practice. Separating the person from their behaviour, the concept of ‘recovery’ promotes positive change by supporting and working with service users to address internal conflict, wider troubles, like homelessness and unemployment, and develop a sense of life purpose. The key message is one of hope. For parents with problematic substance misuse this ideally is gained by being confident and capable of independently facing responsibilities, as well as be effective and caring with parenting so children are actively encouraged to reach their…

The First Day of the Rest of My Life As ancient greek philosopher Plato once said, “ The direction in which education starts a man will determine his future life”. After my first few years of school, I learned that this quote is immensely true, since one’s education path dictates what happens in that person's life. Without a doubt, many events can significantly influence how a person lives his life. For example, a death of a loved one, getting a pet, or the first sporting event he attends. Although these are events can shape someone, their first day of school can be even more influential, towards the rest of their life.…

There are moments in the life of a Christian that are specially guarded in the deepest of the heart. Moments that mark a before and an after, moments that are extremely touched with the hand of God. Sometimes people go through experiences that makes them wonder if God is trying to talk to them, or if they are mistakenly assuming that something is from God and in reality is caused by human emotions. Truth is that God wants to communicate with us at all times, he wants to talk to us, even through the smallest things of the daily life. But again, there are moments in the life of a Christian that the voice of God is so loud, so real, so tangible; that you don’t have time to wonder, there is not need to doubt, you can feel with your spirit that God is talking loud and clear.…
