My Career In Education

Improved Essays
I am not your “traditional” student as I am a single mom to four children ranging in age of 26 to 11 and the grandmother to four year old twins. I have a busy and hectic life as three of my children and the twins live with me. I decided to go back to college in my mid 40’s, thus starting a whole new career. I love my job now but I have always dreamed of being a teacher. What really gave me the push to start on this new journey was my grandbabies. I did not want my daughter to have to worry about daycare during school breaks and summer. By getting my degree in teaching I am fulfilling my lifelong dream and will have the opportunity to spend more time with my kids and grandchildren.

When I started taking college classes, my goal was to become a teacher and work with autistic middle and/or high students. I watched my daughter who was working with ARC try to rehabilitate autistic adults so they could live independently. When I would talk to her she would say “Mom, they need to be taught this stuff when they are younger.” We would talk about how autistic children get tons of attention and coaching during their preschool and elementary school years but as they reach middle school and high school there are several who get lost in system. Those who get lost become young adults whom most families cannot handle and they end up in a group home trying to be taught something they should already know. So I started my journey taking as many autistic and psychology classes as I could along with my general studies. I knew I could not change the world but if I could only change the life of one or two students then that was enough. Then I took Mr. Zoromoski’s history and political science classes and a whole new world opened up. I started to see that America has lost what we were founded on and with all of the goings on today we have lost that we are one Nation and have become a nation divided. As I watched my older children go through high school I realized that students do not care about history because they think it does not apply to them and that it is boring. Mr.
