Personal Narrative: A Career As A Dairy Farmer

Improved Essays
Shortly after I graduated High School I realized my dream of working with cattle and following in my father’s footsteps. What I didn’t realize is how much a dairy farmer needs to use written word to converse with others. I was eighteen years old and was talking to a loan officer to purchase my first few animals to start me career as a dairy farmer. He asks me, “What is your plan? How will you earn enough money to cover your loans and live comfortably? How will you convince me that you are a good risk for us to take? I had to convince him not just using words but putting pen to paper and showing him how it would work. I started out by laying out a five-year plan to show him that I had foresight in the industry. I had to show him the realistic numbers of what I would expect to earn, profit, and possibly lose.
After I had the five-year plan layed out I had to tell him about

I found an online template and downloaded it onto my laptop. I then found a pad of paper and a pen and started to list off my skills. I started with the easy things; milk cows, feed cows, drive a tractor, drive a skid loader, etc…. I then decided to delve into my skills a bit more to set myself apart from other potential job seekers; ran my own dairy, can breed cows, hoof trimming, managed employees, etc….
The next step to my job hunt was to write a cover letter. I decided to write about my cow care skills. I wanted my potential employers to know that I would treat their animals and their equipment as my own. I wanted them to know they could trust me with anything. I also wrote on my accomplishments while I ran my own dairy; how I could get high producing cows while making sure that my cows had a very comfortable and long life. I cared very deeply about giving an animal the best quality of life and needed to verbalize that through pen and

I worked in the biology lab labeling pelts, bones, and animal specimens; by twenty-one, I obtained my bachelor’s degree and strived for my first job out of university. That summer, I joined Humane Society Naples and worked as a veterinary assistant, while also volunteering at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida in wildlife rehabilitation. This is my turning point and reminds me of Claudia at age seven, who wanted to save animals. The most vivid and unforgettable part of my time there was seeing the transformation of the animal’s health and behavior. From the time, they come into the shelter, scared and sometimes in pain, to then being apart of the team to medically assess and treat them, to witness their ability to play with other animals, and then to the joys of adopters coming in looking for their forever pet, is…

Three careers that would be well suited for me are a cost estimator, an operations research analyst, and a conservation officer. Two of these careers involve quantitative thinking and mathematical skills, while the third career involves enforcing laws and regulations and working outdoors. Due to my interest in working outdoors I have chosen conservation officer as the best career opportunity for me. The first job I researched is a cost estimator. I researched this job because it involves mathematical skills on a daily basis.…

I believe that my personal background, and my success despite the adversity that I have faced is an essential part of who I am. The first of my struggles came from being born to two teenage parents without at least a high school education, and although my mother went on to get a GED and to college my father did not. Many people in my family had issues with substance abuse and addictions including my father. Although, I was raised by my mother and grandmother, my father’s actions and behaviors negatively impacted my life. My father was verbally and mentally abusive to the people around him, especially when he used alcohol.…

I come from a poor family. I never had brand-name shoes or video games, or even a Lisa Frank binder and stickers like my friends at school, but I always had plenty of food in the fridge at home. My family never went hungry in spite of the fact that we were raised by a single mother who made her living as a coffee shop waitress. I did not know, till I was a teenager, that my mom bought the majority of our groceries with food stamps. It never seemed odd to me that she went to the grocery store one time a month and stocked up on milk, sugar, lunchmeat, chicken legs, hamburger meat, and most importantly, coffee.…

Growing up in rural Nebraska had its benefits and drawbacks. The freedom to virtually do anything outside was nice, but it came at the expense of my social life along with making my aspirations harder to follow. I wouldn’t trade my experiences for anything, but I would be lying if I told you I didn’t struggle living in a rural community. The pressure of being a farmer’s son is very high.…

It was 2015, I was assisting my uncle, a veterinarian, in an orthopedic surgery on a dog. The air smelt heavily of alcohol, used for sterilization, my arms were starting to ache as I held the dog’s leg steady for amputation. The rush of adrenaline I felt kept my hands motionless, as I watched my uncle line up the bone cutters. The pressure built between my fingers till I felt the final snap of the bone. It was in this moment, and many moments proceeding, that I made my decision to pursue a career in the veterinarian field.…

“Congratulations!!” read one post on a friend’s Facebook wall, the day after she landed an office job in her field. “So amazing!” read another. “Are you ready for your big-girl job?” asked a third well-wisher, accompanied by a GIF of Amy Poehler as Leslie Knope. “I can’t believe I finally have a real job” was the text she sent me a few days later, from the comfort of her desk, where she had been hired to do operations work for an organization she had once, a few years prior, interned for.…

There are a couple of obstacles that have played a major role in me becoming who I am today. I've had naysayers trying to negatively influence my thoughts, and crush my dreams by saying that said I will never amount to anything, or that I should give up on my dreams and get realistic with my goals. A couple years ago I was a completely different person. I was out of shape physically, my academic performance was very poor, and I had a terrible attitude. I improved greatly in athletics and my academic career.…
