My Life As A Bat, Carry And Animal Farm

The relationship that exists between both humans and animals is a fragile one, due to the sometimes abusive way that animals and humans interact with each other. The never ending cycle of abuse occurs continually every day without unwillingly knowing that humans themselves are the main perpetrators. Examples of the abusive relationships that exists between animals and humans can be seen in Margaret Atwood's short story My life as a bat, Carry by Lily Hogan and Animal Farm by George Orwell. Although humans and animals may interact in a sometimes abusive way at the end of the day both species are the same. Often times humans act out in an abusive way against animals because they are unaccustomed or unaware their presence. When humans do become aware of the presence of the animal they act out in volatile ways because they believe that the animal will hurt them. For example, when people see bats they often try to attack the bat because bats carry the negative connotation that they hurt people. This can be seen in Margaret Atwood's short story My Life As A Bat. In her short story, Atwood talks about having reincarnated as a bat in a previous life and how as a bat she faced discrimination a numerous amount of times. Specifically, Atwood states, “...Clinging to the ceiling of a summer cottage while a red-faced man in white shorts ...jumps up and down hitting me with a tennis racket” (22-24). This specific excerpt taken from Atwood’s story demonstrates how humans interact with the animal. Atwood’s short story gives insight to the abuse that animals often suffer for no reason.
