This experience didn't truly shape my goals in life until our campus suffered an immense tragedy. One of our students, a sophomore, took her own life. It hit both students and faculty hard and for almost a month, our school’s administration did nothing to acknowledge the loss we had all suffered. It was during this time that I faced with several rattled students looking to me for emotional support and guidance.…

I have done my fall internship at the same school but during the day. I feel that there is a lot I can do to support the students both academically and emotionally. During the first meeting with the counselor she expressed that being bilingual and bi-cultural will help. I know that there are not many opportunities to talk or have sessions with students, since they don’t have elective classes where I can see them, but I will try my best to be flexible with their schedules. I found out that they have a student government association, so I will try to be involved in their activities,…

It takes a passion for learning, determination, and the ability to make the most of what you have. For that you are required to take seven college level courses, a two hour lab for all science classes, conduct six-weeks of summer research and still participate in extracurricular activities. Counselors have the responsibility of working with clients one on one, and also collaborating with other professionals that could benefit the best interest of their clients. Counselors need to acknowledge and respect the professionals that have their own specializations and understand that often times in human services, we never solely work on our own. In this situation, a Child Life Specialist would be an example of a professional with whom I could collaborate with in the future. Child Life Specialists (CLS) would be an excellent group of professionals to collaborate with as Mental Health Counselors. CLS have the difficult role to work with children in hospitals and support them through the process of fighting diseases and illness while trying to cope with many other factors that affect them within this process.…

When I began Energy Express, I thought my role would be improving children's reading skills and helping them cultivate a passion for reading. However, throughout my summer of service I learned that the role of an Energy Express mentor is much greater. To mentor a child is to shape their personality and future, it is to help them grow to love learning and also to love themselves, it is to offer them hope and love since many children in this area struggle within untraditional family structures, and it is to teach them their potential is endless. Therefore, my three goals would be: cultivate a love for readnig through hands-on activities, provide a support, fun, and active enviroment that welcomes and comforts all children, and to build lasting, stable friendships among the children I mentor.…

Many times I sat on my bed crying because it seems like everything piled on me at one time.…
