Personal Narrative: The Change In My Life

One thing we’re sure about life is that it is constantly changing. People go through many changes in life whether by choice or not. There are positive and negative changes that affect our lives. It can happen in a moment or gradually over time. The most important thing about change is whether you like it or not, you have to deal with it. My life changed in one moment, but I have learned to move forward. On Christmas 2010, I was excited to get the Wii gaming console. As a result, I ended up playing my games for hours that day. When I decided to stop, I went downstairs with my brother. Like any big brother/little sister relationship, we would play fight all the time. Who knew something so normal can turn bad at any given second? I started to feel a numbness in my leg. That’s when I tried to stop fighting. The next thing I knew my vision was gone. Now I had limitations in my life that a normal person wouldn’t have. I was restricted from any driving activities for six months. At this age, driving was the main thing my peers started to do, therefore I felt different from them. I wasn’t allowed to go on fair rides or participate in sports without supervision. I could tell the effect it was having on my family. They would watch my every move whenever it was possible. At the slightest sound, they would call up to make sure I hadn’t fallen into another episode. My mother would always tell me “You’ll be okay. God will protect you.” I believed and trusted in her words because they helped me deal with everything that was going on. My closest friends would also watch out for my health. They were constantly on my case about eating when I’m supposed to. Although I felt a bit suffocated by all the attention, I am thankful for the people who helped me through it all.
